Why 23-year-old Liverpool Star Might Have to Look Elsewhere for First-team Football

Under normal circumstances, Curtis Jones would likely be up for contract discussions this summer.

While the Liverpool midfielder still has three years left on his current deal, his transition from a fringe player to a regular starter usually warrants talks of an improved contract. Yet, it’s doubtful that the 23-year-old will be a priority for the new sporting director, Richard Hughes.

Hughes, chosen by Michael Edwards to overhaul the squad, faces more immediate concerns with key players like Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold nearing the end of their contracts. Additionally, he must ensure Arne Slot has a squad suited to his style of play for Liverpool’s success.

Once these matters are addressed, Hughes may turn his attention to Ibrahima Konate. With the French defender’s contract running down after the current season, negotiations with him might take precedence over Jones.

Still, Jones likely feels he’s earned a discussion about his future at Liverpool. His 14 Premier League starts this season, a career high, demonstrate his importance to the team. With fewer injuries, his appearances could easily have approached 25 matches.

What Role Can Curtis Jones Play Under Slot?

He emerged as a pivotal figure for the Reds following Jurgen Klopp’s adoption of the inverted system, primarily operating as a facilitator in the middle third.

His adaptability made him an ideal complement to players like Luis Diaz and Andrew Robertson on Liverpool’s left side, with his cautious approach in possession balancing out Trent Alexander-Arnold’s more attacking style on the right flank.

Unfortunately, injuries have marred his 2023/24 campaign, leading to his absence from the pitch for a total of 15 games over three separate periods. This has undoubtedly hindered his prospects of securing a new contract.

While he may have been a regular starter if not for his injury woes, the reality is that his prolonged absence has diminished his standing as a crucial member of Klopp’s starting lineup. Additionally, there’s no guarantee that he’ll feature prominently under Arne Slot, despite Klopp’s admiration for him.

As Slot aims to replicate his Feyenoord tactics at Anfield, questions arise regarding the player’s suitability for Slot’s preferred formations, such as the 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3.

His lack of creativity likely rules him out for the attacking midfielder role, while his aggressive pressing style may not fully compensate for the tactical intelligence required to anchor the midfield.

One plausible position for him could be on the left side of midfield or as part of a double pivot in a box-to-box role, reminiscent of his duties under Klopp.

However, if reports of Liverpool seeking a more physically imposing defensive midfielder are accurate, players like Alexis Mac Allister could potentially overshadow him, given their prior experience in similar roles.

Furthermore, the emergence of other talents like Ryan Gravenberch could further limit his opportunities under Slot’s management, suggesting a potential shift in the pecking order.

CurtisJones is a Liverpool Fan Not Arsenal

Jones might see a decrease in playing time next season. While speculative, it’s worth considering when assessing why he might not secure the desired deal. His commitment to the club could heavily influence his future.

When penning a new contract in 2022, he said: “It’s my boyhood club, I’m a Scouser, I’ve supported the club for the whole of my life.” Paul Joyce of the Times made a point earlier in the season within one of his reports, saying: “Contrary to erroneous rumours that he was an Arsenal supporter growing up, his allegiance has always been Liverpool and he always pretended to be [Steven] Gerrard.”

Liverpool won’t actively seek to transfer Jones. As a homegrown talent, if he’s content with a role in the revamped squad, he’ll stay put even without a new contract. However, if he desires not just a contract extension but assurances of a significant role in the first team, he might have to explore other options to avoid career stagnation.

Even if he spends the season as a squad player, Jones will maintain his market value. His Expected Transfer Value stands at €23.6 million, slightly lower than his peak of €30.5 million. This value is likely to remain stable due to his youth, homegrown status, and unique skill set.

Liverpool haven’t reached a definitive decision on Jones yet, but that could change this summer if he signals openness to a move elsewhere.
