Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim has emerged as a leading contender for Liverpool’s managerial position as they compile a shortlist of potential successors to Jurgen Klopp for the upcoming season.
On Good Friday, Liverpool suffered a blow as their primary target, Xabi Alonso, announced his decision to remain at Bayer Leverkusen for the next season.
Despite Liverpool’s interest, there were doubts regarding Alonso’s departure from Leverkusen, prompting the club to swiftly pivot towards alternative options.
Amorim, aged 39, has garnered acclaim for his managerial prowess at Sporting Lisbon, guiding the team to their first league title in 19 years last season, disrupting the dominance of Benfica and Porto. Sporting currently lead the league standings, positioned one point ahead of Benfica with a game in hand.
Reports from The Telegraph indicate that Liverpool may need to activate Amorim’s £13 million release clause to secure his services.
Despite this, Amorim has consistently expressed contentment with his role at Sporting and emphasised that any potential departure would hinge on finding a project that aligns perfectly with his vision and aspirations.
What Has Ruben Amorim Said About Liverpool Interest?
Amorin, renowned for his exceptional communication abilities, faced questions regarding Liverpool’s interest in him during the press conference.
Although he reaffirmed his commitment to Sporting, the talented manager hasn’t entirely dismissed the prospect of joining Anfield.
“I am focused on Sporting. I am very proud to be Sporting’s coach. We are focussed on winning titles,” said Amorim, as quoted by O Jogo (page 6).
“Liverpool? We will see in the end. I have a contract and I am very happy here.”
Amorin holds Jose Mourinho in high regard, regarding him as his idol. At Sporting, he implements a strict 3-4-3 formation, placing significant emphasis on the wing-backs’ roles within it.
While Amorin’s style diverges from Klopp’s, his personality carries a comparable level of influence. The idea of stepping into Klopp’s shoes and forging his own legacy holds allure for Amorin.
Meanwhile, Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes are exploring alternative candidates. Among them, Roberto De Zerbi from Brighton is being considered as another potential option.
