Liverpool supporters are still grappling with the report that Xabi Alonso appears poised to reject the Reds’ offer and continue as Bayer Leverkusen’s manager beyond the upcoming summer.
Additionally, it appears that another potential candidate could be on the verge of ruling himself out of the race.
Italian football journalist Gianluca Di Marzio claims that Simone Inzaghi is set to extend his contract with Inter Milan, as the club seek to solidify his position for the foreseeable future, amid reported attention from Liverpool and other clubs.
The reporter said (via FC Inter News): “Simone Inzaghi has some Premier League clubs that really appreciate him, but I think that he’s decided to stay.
“He’ll extend his contract. The time has not yet come for him to leave. There are still important goals left for him to achieve.”
While Inzaghi’s name hasn’t garnered as much attention as Alonso’s throughout Liverpool’s recent managerial quest, his decision to remain with his current club could be deemed equally impactful for the Reds as Bayer Leverkusen’s boss choosing to stay put.
Similar to Alonso, the 47-year-old has led his team to a commanding lead in the league this season, with Inter holding an 11-point advantage and a game in hand as of this morning (31 March).
Also, he guided them to the Champions League final last year, where they narrowly fell to treble-winning Manchester City in Istanbul.
From his perspective, it’s understandable, but unfortunately for Liverpool, he appears resolute in his commitment to stay with the Nerazzurri and further build upon the success he’s already achieved at the San Siro.
With Alonso and now Inzaghi both effectively out of the running, it leaves Ruben Amorim and Roberto De Zerbi as the top candidates for the Liverpool position according to recent reports.
However, as demonstrated by the unexpected move from the Leverkusen manager in recent days, there’s always the possibility of major plot twists in this ongoing saga.
Two months after Jurgen Klopp’s departure announcement, progress doesn’t seem to have advanced much from the initial stages.
