Latest rumours surrounding the new manager for Liverpool continue to circulate, with Xabi Alonso maintaining his position as the frontrunner. This speculation coincides with insights into Alonso’s future plans at Bayer Leverkusen.
It’s been reported that Xabi Alonso harboured ambitions of managing Liverpool since his appointment at Bayer Leverkusen. His tenure at the club has evidently fueled this aspiration.
Alonso’s name has surfaced as the top contender to succeed Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool’s manager when Klopp steps down at the end of the current season.
Klopp’s announcement last month about his imminent departure has ignited discussions about who will fill his shoes at Anfield.
Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi, Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim, and Thomas Frank at Brentford are among those linked with the managerial position, alongside Alonso. Despite the array of candidates, Alonso has maintained his status as the frontrunner in recent weeks.
Alonso, the former Liverpool midfielder, took over as manager at Leverkusen in October 2022. His managerial journey began with Real Sociedad B, the club where he started his professional playing career.
Leverkusen finished sixth last season, and under Alonso’s leadership, they currently sit atop the Bundesliga, five points ahead of Bayern Munich following their convincing 3-0 win over the weekend.
Guillem Balague, a Spanish football expert, has shed light on Liverpool’s purported interest in Alonso.
According to Balague, Alonso has discussed with his agent potential destinations post-Leverkusen, with Liverpool being one of the clubs on his radar depending on his tenure with the German side.
“I’ll tell you a little secret,” Balague told the BBC’s Football News Show. “When he [Alonso] went to Bayer Leverkusen, he told his agent ‘do you know what, I am thinking that if it doesn’t go well at Bayer Leverkusen, I’ll go back to Real Sociedad. But if it goes well, from here, it’s Liverpool, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich’.”
Balague added: “Let me add Manchester City to the equation and that’s where Xabi Alonso could go next. When, is a different matter.”
