Report Reveals Why Liverpool are Willing to Sell Young Players This Summer
Liverpool’s apparent readiness to part with their young players is influenced by multiple factors rather than a directive from the new manager, Arne Slot, according to 90min.
There has been growing unease among fans on social media as Liverpool consider letting go of several promising young talents.
Fabio Carvalho has already moved to Brentford in a deal potentially worth up to £27.5 million. Additionally, players such as Ben Doak, Bobby Clark, and Sepp van den Berg face uncertain futures as the summer transfer window draws to a close.
These young players had a significant impact during Liverpool’s 2023/24 season, including their notable victory over Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final. However, 90min have indicated that such extensive use of academy players was not originally intended but rather a result of injuries.
Liverpool’s decision-makers have been evaluating the potential of these emerging talents, and with the support of the new leadership team at Anfield, they have decided that a restructuring of the squad is necessary.
Winger Doak is among those awaiting a final decision on their future as he deals with the aftermath of a challenging season marred by injuries.
Liverpool and their new manager, Slot, are still evaluating the 18-year-old’s situation. Doak might still go out on loan or even leave permanently if a suitable offer is made. Leicester City, Southampton, and Al Nassr have all expressed interest in him.
Slot is also looking closely at 19-year-old midfielder Bobby Clark, who, like Doak, has recently returned from injury. An £8m bid from Red Bull Salzburg, now managed by Jurgen Klopp’s former assistant Pep Lijnders, was rejected, but discussions about a potential transfer are ongoing.
Liverpool’s approach to Carvalho was somewhat reactive. The 21-year-old midfielder had caught Slot’s attention during pre-season and impressed Liverpool officials during his loan spell at Hull City last year.
However, Carvalho expressed a desire for a more prominent role this season, prompting Liverpool to take his wishes into account.
Similarly, centre-back Van den Berg has openly expressed a desire to leave Liverpool this summer due to concerns about his path to the first team.
Despite featuring prominently in pre-season, the Dutchman has received interest from various European clubs and could be sold as he enters the final two years of his contract. Liverpool value Van den Berg at approximately £20m.
Liverpool had not anticipated such intense scrutiny on their young talent and have been working to bolster their academy. This includes efforts to secure the signing of highly rated 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha from Chelsea.
The path to the first team remains open for standout performers in Liverpool’s academy, such as 17-year-old midfielder Trey Nyoni.
After debuting last season under Klopp, the teenager has also caught Slot’s attention this summer. Consequently, the decision has been made to retain Nyoni for the upcoming campaign, where he is anticipated to receive significant playing time with the senior team.
