Alexis Mac Allister Already Made Arne Slot’s Biggest Challenge Admission Before Returning to Liverpool
After returning to Liverpool’s pre-season training earlier than anticipated, Alexis Mac Allister has clearly shown his commitment to playing a significant role in the club’s transition into the Arne Slot era.
Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has openly admitted that Arne Slot’s most significant challenge will be stepping into the role previously held by Jurgen Klopp at Anfield. Klopp, the charismatic German manager, left Merseyside at the end of last season after a remarkable nine-year tenure marked by substantial success. Having become a key player in Klopp’s setup during his first year with the Reds, Mac Allister is acutely aware of the void left by Klopp’s departure.
Following his victory in the Copa America with Argentina this summer, the former Brighton star aims to build on a strong debut season with Liverpool in his second year at the club.
His decision to return from international duty earlier than expected and join pre-season training this week underscores his determination to start the new season on a high note under Slot’s leadership.
Originally granted a three-week break by Liverpool due to his international commitments, Mac Allister was expected to rejoin the squad after their tour of the United States.
However, recent photos have surfaced showing Mac Allister and his new manager sharing an embrace, which appeared to be their first face-to-face meeting during the tour.
Earlier, Mac Allister spoke with Clank in his home country, recognizing that the task of replacing Klopp would not be easy. He remarked:
“Obviously it must not be easy at all to replace a coach like Jurgen who was there for almost nine years and at Liverpool is now a legend of the club.
“Jurgen’s farewell was fantastic and he himself created a song for the new coach! And I think that will help him a little. I think Arne, thanks to Jurgen, has entered the club on the right foot. I had talks with the new coach during the Copa America, we talked a little about the club and about what I saw and so on.
Of his early impressions of Slot from their interactions, the World Cup winner added: “You can tell he’s a very trained technician. He spoke to me very well. And I talked with (Argentina teammate and Bournemouth player) Marcos Senesi who played for him at Feyenoord, and he spoke very well of him.”
“So I think there is a lot of optimism about what this season is going to be like for Liverpool, beyond the fact a great manager like Jurgen has left us. We have a great group and we believe the new coach can help us achieve a lot of things.
“I came to Liverpool because I wanted to continue winning things and I felt it was an opportunity of being at a club that is going to fight for things.”
Mac Allister has previously spoken candidly about his close relationship with Klopp, acknowledging that the German coach will be missed by those he left at Anfield. He admitted:
“The truth is he always treated me with a lot of love and respect. I even have to accept that my teammates told me that I am his son! I had that all year — some got jealous and said ‘Your dad, your dad.’ At least now that he’s gone, I have one problem less!
The Argentine added: “I admire him, I have a great relationship with him. He wrote to me after the [Copa America] final and we talked a lot during the season; we exchanged opinions.
“I am grateful because he gave me the opportunity to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world. He opened the doors for me and from the first minute he defended me and helped me.”
