Liverpool May Have Been Handed Summer Transfer Blow After Lamine Yamal’s Euro 2024 Comments

Spain star Lamine Yamal has urged Barcelona to secure the signature of his international teammate, Nico Williams, before Liverpool can.

Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams have both shone at Euro 2024 and Yamal is hopeful that they could be united at Barcelona. The teenage sensation has expressed his desire for Barcelona to sign his international teammate, who is also attracting significant interest from Liverpool.

In addition to Liverpool, clubs such as Aston Villa, Arsenal, and Newcastle United have shown interest in the Athletic Bilbao winger. Last season, Williams made 31 appearances in Spain’s top football division, netting five goals and providing 11 assists.

However, any club interested in the 22-year-old winger may face a significant challenge due to his substantial wage demands. According to HITC, Williams is seeking a weekly wage of around $389,000 (£300k/€356k).

Nonetheless, Yamal is advocating for Barcelona to secure a deal for his Spanish teammate, motivated by the close relationship they have built during their time in Germany this summer.

“Yes, I wish Nico could come to Barca,” Yamal said to Diario Sport earlier this summer.

“At the first meeting, I met Nico and then we became very good friends. We get along very well. You can see that on the pitch too, that we are very close, that we are very good friends. And that is the most important thing to have the connection on the pitch.”

Yamal and Williams are aiming to win the European Championships on Sunday in Berlin, with Spain facing England in the final.

Luis de la Fuente’s team reached the final by overcoming France in a thrilling comeback, with Yamal’s remarkable goal equalising the match. Meanwhile, England advanced after Ollie Watkins’ late goal secured their victory over the Netherlands on Wednesday.

Williams demonstrated his talent in the international tournament, showcasing his dribbling skills, speed, and playmaking ability—attributes that Liverpool needs on the left wing.

With uncertainty surrounding Luis Diaz’s future at the club, Liverpool faces a decision about his tenure. Barcelona is reportedly interested in Diaz, and selling him to the Catalan club could reduce the competition for Williams’ signature this summer.
