Liverpool on Alert as €150m Forward Losing Hope on Securing Starting Place Next Season
Real Madrid’s Champions League-winning forward Rodrygo is reportedly losing confidence in his chances of securing a starting position at the club next season. This has led to speculation that he might soon leave the Bernabeu.
According to a report from Sport, the 23-year-old doubts that new signing Kylian Mbappe will consistently play as the team’s No. 9. Instead, he believes Mbappe will often move to the wings, which could threaten Rodrygo’s place in Carlo Ancelotti’s preferred starting lineup.
Rodrygo is currently facing challenges at the Copa America with Brazil, where the pre-tournament favorites drew with Costa Rica on the opening day.
Sport also reports that while Rodrygo has been trying to ignore transfer rumors during his time in the United States with the national team, he and his entourage are increasingly concerned about his future following Mbappe’s arrival.
Last summer, Madrid made a landmark signing with Jude Bellingham, who was initially a target for Liverpool. Bellingham played as a false 9 for much of the season, with Vinicius on the left and Rodrygo on the right.
This resulted in Rodrygo taking on a more supporting role as Madrid’s two superstars led the attack, culminating in a LaLiga and Champions League double.
Rodrygo finished the season with 17 goals in 51 games, two fewer than the previous season, despite playing six fewer matches.
The report states that Madrid has been trying to boost Rodrygo’s confidence by assuring him he will still play a crucial role in the team. The club has attempted to reassure Rodrygo that with Joselu moving to Al-Gharafa, Mbappe will shift to the front, leaving the wings open.
However, it is surprisingly claimed that Rodrygo and his entourage no longer believe these reassurances.
The former Santos academy player is contracted with Madrid until 2028 but will face increased competition for his starting position next season.
In addition to competing with Mbappe, Rodrygo will also have to contend with Arda Guler, who impressed at Euro 2024. Moreover, he will face competition from Brazilian teenage sensation Endrick and Brahim Diaz.
Liverpool Lead Race for Rodrygo
Premier League teams, such as Liverpool, are closely monitoring the situation in case Rodrygo becomes available.
Liverpool have shown a long-standing interest in the winger, almost securing him as their first European signing when he left Santos. According to recent Spanish media reports, Liverpool has made an offer to acquire him this summer.
However, Manchester City, Arsenal, and Newcastle have also shown interest. Previous reports suggest that Madrid is prepared to demand €150 million to lure him away from the club.
Arsenal are aware that Rodrygo may seek an exit and are prepared to bide their time for the right opportunity. There are suggestions that Madrid might choose to preempt any potential issues by offloading Rodrygo before any discontent arises.
Nevertheless, according to Sport, Rodrygo’s representatives are concerned about his potential decline in the team’s hierarchy and are prepared to request a transfer if necessary.
Liverpool are actively seeking wingers this summer, especially with Mohamed Salah’s contract expiring in 2025 and uncertainties surrounding Luis Diaz.
