Liverpool on Red Alert as Both 29-year-old and Club Now Open to Summer Departure
Joshua Kimmich is becoming more likely to leave Bayern Munich. Previously linked to him, Liverpool will be on red alert for a potential transfer of the experienced player.
Liverpool will be closely monitoring Joshua Kimmich’s situation. Both Kimmich and Bayern Munich are now open to a summer move.
Kimmich’s current contract expires next summer, and he is willing to let it run out and leave for free. To avoid this, Bayern are open to selling him if a suitable offer is made, according to Sky Germany.
This development is significant for Liverpool, especially if Arne Slot decides he needs a specialist holding midfielder.
Since Fabinho’s departure, Liverpool have lacked a dedicated player in that role, having missed out on Moises Caicedo, signed Wataru Endo as a temporary solution, and used Alexis Mac Allister in a makeshift capacity.
Kimmich is a seasoned player in that position, also having extensive experience as a right-back. This versatility would allow Slot to utilise Trent Alexander-Arnold in various roles, adding another world-class option capable of playing a hybrid position.
At 29, Kimmich does not fit the typical profile of a Liverpool signing, especially with Michael Edwards back in the mix.
However, Plettenberg reports that Liverpool are among five teams vying for Kimmich’s signature, alongside Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester City, and Arsenal.
This is tough competition, and Liverpool would need to offer a substantial salary to attract the 29-year-old, who is one of Bayern Munich’s highest earners. His wages would place him among the top earners at Anfield as well.
Interested teams will need to contact Kimmich directly, as he is currently without an official agent.
It’s intriguing that Sky Germany believes Liverpool are still in contention. This is not the type of transfer one would expect to herald a new era under Edwards’ increased control.
However, there could be a case for deviating from usual transfer policies. If Liverpool have evaluated the market for holding midfielders and determined that no available player can significantly elevate the team, Kimmich might serve as a premium alternative to Endo, acting as a world-class stopgap until the Reds are prepared for a more permanent solution.
Despite the likely wage demands, it’s difficult to imagine Liverpool pursuing this deal, even with a relatively low transfer fee.
To compete against other clubs vying for his signature, Liverpool must continue to do things differently, always looking ahead and discovering new talent.
