Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has been urged to make a surprise move to Liverpool as the Reds could be about to lose Caoimhin Kelleher in the summer transfer window.
Kelleher has expressed a strong desire to play regularly, having spent much of his career as Alisson Becker’s backup.
The Irish goalkeeper enjoyed a stint of regular play when Alisson was injured last season, earning praise for his impressive performances.
Speculation suggests that Kelleher might leave to become a first-choice goalkeeper elsewhere, with Celtic reportedly among the interested clubs.
Despite the potential for a fresh start under Arne Slot, Kelleher recently downplayed his chances of displacing Alisson next season, telling The Athletic:
“It would be great if that happened at Liverpool, but I’m not silly. I know that Ali has been the best goalkeeper in the world for years.”
Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson thinks that if Kelleher leaves Liverpool, Ramsdale would have an opportunity to compete with Alisson for the starting position at Anfield.
“If Kelleher leaves Liverpool, there’s an opportunity for him to go and be a No 1 with Alisson,” said Robinson. “Look at the amount of games Kelleher has played this year compared to Ramsdale.
“There’s an opportunity there to have more game time and prove himself. Aaron Ramsdale has got to go somewhere and he’s got to play. He’s been harshly treated at Arsenal. I think the way [Mikel] Arteta handled the situation was wrong.”
Ramsdale served as Arsenal’s primary goalkeeper for two seasons but was relegated to a bench role last season, with David Raya gaining Arteta’s confidence after arriving on loan from Brentford.
Raya is anticipated to make a permanent move to the Emirates Stadium this summer, possibly sidelining Ramsdale.
Whether Ramsdale can contend for a starting position at Liverpool remains uncertain, as Alisson is expected to maintain his spot in the team next season.
Alisson has been one of the world’s top goalkeepers for several years, making it a significant challenge for Ramsdale to surpass the Brazilian in the lineup.
Ramsdale’s departure from the Premier League club this summer wouldn’t be surprising, as regular playtime is crucial for his hopes of competing with Jordan Pickford to become England’s first-choice goalkeeper.
However, Liverpool may not be the ideal destination, given that Alisson is almost certain to retain his position next season.
