Arne Slot’s Transfer Priority Emerges as Liverpool ‘Reignites Interest’ in Jurgen Klopp Target

Jurgen Klopp was interested in signing Levi Colwill last summer, but he decided to stay at Chelsea. Now, with Arne Slot as the new manager, he might pursue a deal for Colwill.

Liverpool are reportedly ready to reignite their interest in Chelsea defender Levi Colwill this summer. Colwill was heavily linked with Liverpool a year ago after impressing during a loan spell at Brighton.

However, he chose to stay at Stamford Bridge and signed a new long-term deal with Chelsea. The 21-year-old featured in 32 matches under Mauricio Pochettino this season and was rewarded with his first senior England call-up.

Liverpool may test Chelsea’s resolve again when the transfer window opens, as the Blues are reportedly under pressure to sell at least one homegrown player to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules.

According to the Daily Mail, Colwill is a player ‘liked’ by Liverpool, although Chelsea have no plans to let him go this summer. His current contract, which includes the option of an additional year, does not expire until 2029.

It is also noted that Arne Slot is keen to add a versatile left-footed defender to his squad this summer, capable of playing both centrally and at full-back. Colwill fits this profile, having performed well in both roles for Chelsea this season.

The Reds have allowed Joël Matip to depart after his contract expired, leaving Slot with four recognised central defenders: Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konaté, Joe Gomez, and Jarell Quansah. However, none of these players are naturally left-sided options.

Liverpool have also been linked with Eintracht Frankfurt’s Willian Pacho and Feyenoord’s Dávid Hancko, who has previously been suggested as a potential recruit by Slot.

Hancko’s agent indicated that discussions between the two clubs took place a year ago, and Hancko himself has revealed he grew up as a Liverpool fan.

According to The Athletic, Slot also plans to evaluate defender Sepp van den Berg this summer when he returns from his loan spell with Mainz. Although it was claimed that Mainz had a cut-price first-option clause in his loan agreement, this is not thought to be the case.

Liverpool are likely to demand around $25 million (£20 million/€23 million) for Van den Berg if he is to be sold, with Brentford and Southampton both reportedly monitoring the situation.

If Slot seeks a versatile left-sided defender, few match Colwill’s capabilities. A genuine talent, Colwill has already demonstrated his potential at Brighton and Chelsea.

Though any deal would be costly, he could serve as a long-term replacement for Van Dijk in Liverpool’s defense.
