Darwin Nunez Breaks Silence After Liverpool Deleted Posts and Responds to ‘Andy Carroll’ Chants

Earlier this month, Darwin Nunez removed all Liverpool-related content from his Instagram account. Despite his efforts to block out negativity on social media, Nunez admitted that it can still impact him.

Nunez recently completed his second season at Liverpool, having joined the club from Benfica in the summer of 2022 for a potential club-record fee of £85 million. He has scored 33 goals and provided 17 assists in 93 appearances for Liverpool.

However, the striker has struggled to maintain consistent form, often missing numerous clear-cut chances, and he finished the season out of the Reds’ starting lineup.

Following a 4-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur earlier this month, Nunez deleted all of his Liverpool-related photos from his Instagram account.

This action sparked speculation that he might leave Anfield during the summer transfer window, with Barcelona being one of the clubs linked to him.

In an interview with Por la jersey (via ESPN Uruguay), Nunez admitted that he tries to laugh off his setbacks on the pitch and avoids paying attention to any criticism directed at him.

“From the moment you start playing and until you retire, there will always be someone who will criticize you. I avoid reading those comments,” said Nunez, who has since changed his Instagram display picture oh himself, partner and child all wearing Liverpool kits after Sunday’s 2-0 win over Wolves.

“Before, I did look them a lot and it affected me. Whoever says that those negative comments do not affect them is lying, those negative comments that are directed towards you will always affect you.

“They tell me everything, but I ignore those comments because they are of no use to me. I never look at the negative comments on social media, at least now I’m not looking at anything, not even the good stuff. If a game goes badly for me, I rely on my family .”

“When things go badly for me, I get hot, but I try to laugh with my family and not show my son the anger I have, what happened in the game is already there, it’s already happened, and there is always revenge.”

Nunez has faced jeers from opposition fans since his arrival in England, often taunted with the chant, “Just a s*** Andy Carroll,” whenever he misses goal-scoring opportunities.

However, the former Almeria forward silenced Nottingham Forest supporters in March by scoring a decisive header in the 99th minute, securing a 1-0 victory for Liverpool.

In a candid moment, Nunez admitted he didn’t understand what the home fans at the City Ground were chanting at him.

He added: “In that game, the Nottingham fans were singing to me. But I didn’t understand anything, thank goodness. I ended up scoring the goal on the hour, and then the coach (Jürgen Klopp) in the locker room said ‘screw them’.”
