Liverpool Identify Surprise Xabi Alonso Alternative as the Spaniard Could Reject Anfield Move

Liverpool are actively pursuing Xabi Alonso as the potential successor to Jurgen Klopp, yet they have also identified a surprise alternative if their first choice falls through.

Alonso emerges as the clear frontrunner to assume the role of Liverpool manager come summer, although his acceptance of the position is not assured.

This uncertainty arises due to Bayern Munich’s expressed interest in Alonso, along with the possibility that, should Bayer Leverkusen secure the Bundesliga title, he might opt to remain at his current club.

Liverpool are considering several potential candidates, among them is Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi. However, as per The Independent‘s Miguel Delaney, Ruben Amorim from Sporting CP emerges as the “main contender” alongside Alonso.

Delaney elucidates that Alonso is widely perceived as the candidate most vigorously advocated for, although other clubs will likely share a similar sentiment.

Amorim is hence viewed as the “most desirable candidate” should Alonso decline a transfer to Anfield. The Portuguese manager is considered a “likelier option” than De Zerbi, according to reports.

At 39 years old, Amorim is also drawing interest from top clubs, as noted by Delaney. He has been lauded for his impressive work in reviving Sporting’s fortunes, a club that had been overshadowed by Benfica and Porto for decades.

While the level of interest in Amorim doesn’t match that of Alonso’s, his situation is comparable, with Sporting competing for the Primeira Liga title.

Amorim guided Sporting to their first title in 19 years during his debut season in 2020/21, and they are currently neck and neck with Benfica in the ongoing campaign.

He also clinched victory in the Taca da Liga – the Portuguese counterpart of the League Cup – three consecutive times with SC Braga (2019/20) and Sporting (2020/21 and 2021/22).

Alonso’s appointment would unquestionably elevate the profile and prestige of the position, yet Amorim stands out as one of the most compelling alternatives.

This sentiment appears to resonate within Liverpool’s boardroom, with Sporting’s accomplishments this season capturing their attention.
