Liverpool Considering Three Premier League Men as Jorg Schmadtke Replacement

Liverpool are said to be considering options within the Premier League to fill the role of sporting director vacated by Jorg Schmadtke.

The 59-year-old confirmed his departure from the position on Friday, marking the need for the club’s third appointment in that role since the summer of 2022.

HITC reported on Monday morning that Liverpool have initiated the search for a replacement, considering candidates from other English top-flight clubs.

Among those being considered are Richard Hughes from Bournemouth, Lee Dykes from Brentford, and Sam Jewell from Brighton, with ‘homework’ done on those prospective candidates.

Richard Hughes, the former Arsenal and Portsmouth midfielder, has spent the past decade contributing behind the scenes at Bournemouth. His involvement includes their promotion to the Premier League in 2015 and continuous participation in the top flight since then.

Brentford’s technical director since 2022, Dykes has overseen notable young signings, such as Zabarnyi, Kerkez, Adams, Ouattara, Aarons, and Scott. Aarons, in particular, has garnered recent interest from Liverpool.

Dykes transitioned from head of scouting to his current role, identifying key players pivotal to Brentford’s success since their 2021 promotion to the Premier League.

Jewell, son of former Premier League manager Paul, played a role in Bradford’s survival in 2000 and Wigan’s success later. Brighton’s 34-year-old head of scouting has been influential in significant transfers, including the loan of Ansu Fati and profitable sales of Caicedo and Mac Allister last summer.

He also discovered talents like Ostigard and Gyokeres, who made impacts at Napoli and Sporting Lisbon after joining Brighton.

All three candidates boast impressive CVs. Liverpool hope the successor to Schmadtke, be it Dykes, Jewell, or Brighton’s scout, will bring stability to the sporting director role after recent changes. Edwards, Ward, and now Schmadtke have stepped aside in the last two years.
