Xabi Alonso Bundesliga Rival Coach Tipped for Liverpool Job After Jurgen Klopp Exit

Former Liverpool goalkeeper David James has suggested Edin Terzic as a potential candidate to succeed Jurgen Klopp after his imminent departure from the Premier League giants. This recommendation places Terzic alongside Bundesliga fellow Xabi Alonso in the list of possible successors.

Upon the revelation of James’ endorsement on Friday morning, the name of Xabi Alonso resonated among many supporters on the red side of Stanley Park. While Alonso is understandably considered the early frontrunner for Klopp’s position, it’s not solely due to his familiarity with the club.

According to the former Liverpool number one, there is another promising and youthful Bundesliga-based coach who could adeptly fill the void left by the departure of the iconic Premier League tactician.

“Xabi Alonso is an interesting one. This is a guy who is doing super well in the Bundesliga and he will have a host of clubs interested in him,” James tells Sky Sports of a man who has led unbeaten Leverkusen to 24 wins from 27 this season.

“So, in a way, he’s got options to make the choice rather than just his love for Liverpool overriding any decision he may make.

“Obviously, he may decide to stay at Leverkusen.

“If I can, Dortmund’s Edin Terzic could be an option. He’s done a fantastic job with Dortmund. And with Jurgen Klopp coming from Dortmund, there seems to be a nice bit of synergy there.”

Despite their common BVB background, Terzic faces challenges in establishing himself as a serious contender for the Liverpool job. While he did lead Dortmund to within minutes of a league title last season, the 41-year-old German, who previously served as an assistant coach at West Ham, finds himself grappling to break free from Klopp’s influential legacy.

What’s more, Die Schwarzgelben have encountered difficulties in the current domestic campaign. Presently, they lag behind by five points and a significant 15 points behind Alonso’s table-topping Leverkusen.

“For Liverpool, they will already have a list of managers they will be keeping an eye on,” James adds. “There may be people we haven’t even talked about.”

Brighton and Hove Albion manager Roberto de Zerbi is reportedly considered for the position, but currently, Alonso is widely viewed as the leading candidate, despite the World Cup winner expressing a desire to downplay the rumours.
