Manchester City moved to within two points of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League with a hard-fought 1-0 win away to Leeds United.
Despite being without Erling Haaland due to a minor injury, Pep Guardiola’s side found a way to grind out three precious points at Elland Road, ending Leeds’ 25-match unbeaten run in evening home fixtures.
Leeds started at a ferocious tempo and should have taken the lead inside three minutes. Marc Guehi went down under pressure from Dominic Calvert-Lewin, but play continued, and Brenden Aaronson’s cross found Calvert-Lewin unmarked, only for the striker to stab wide.
Chances continued to fall for the hosts. Gianluigi Donnarumma stood tall to deny Aaronson on a rapid counter, while at the other end, Karl Darlow produced two sharp saves in succession to thwart Nico O’Reilly.
City struck with the final kick of the first half. Rayan Cherki threaded a sumptuous pass through the lines to Rayan Ait-Nouri, whose low cross was perfectly weighted for Antoine Semenyo to tap home from close range.
After the interval, Omar Marmoush twice went close but failed to capitalise, first poking wide at the near post and then stumbling as he shot off target after a loose ball from Ruben Dias found him at the back stick.
Leeds pushed late on, with Jaka Bijol heading narrowly wide from a deep corner, but Guardiola’s side held firm to secure a narrow yet vital victory.
