Liverpool head coach Arne Slot remains steadfast in his philosophy despite the club enduring one of its toughest spells under his leadership. The reigning Premier League champions have suffered six defeats in their last seven games, including a painful 3-0 Carabao Cup exit to Crystal Palace, leaving them seven points behind leaders Arsenal and under mounting pressure.

Rumours of stalled contract talks have added to the tension, but Slot insists his focus remains on getting Liverpool back on track.

Slot Defends His Team Selection Amid Injury Crisis
Following the midweek defeat, Slot faced criticism for resting several of his key players — including Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Hugo Ekitike. However, the Dutchman defended his decisions, explaining that injuries and player fatigue left him with little choice.
“I’m happy with the quality of the team. But I’m also convinced by the strategy and policy we have,” Slot told reporters ahead of Saturday’s crucial clash with Aston Villa.
He elaborated that many of his players did not have a proper pre-season, which has contributed to Liverpool’s recent struggles.
“When three or four players are injured, your options shrink quickly. I believe 21 or 22 players are enough — but only when you can keep them fit,” he explained.
Slot also pointed out that a congested schedule has stretched his squad to its limits.
“We’ve played several away games with only two days in between. It’s not an excuse — just reality. Last season we were lucky with injuries; this season, not so much.”
There is, however, some good news. Ryan Gravenberch has returned to full training and could feature against Villa, although Curtis Jones and Alexander Isak are still ruled out.

Slot Refuses to Abandon His Playing Philosophy

Despite the mounting criticism, Slot has made it clear that he will not compromise on his attacking style of play. After Liverpool’s 3-2 defeat to Brentford, many suggested that a more defensive approach might steady the ship — but Slot remains firm in his convictions.
“Playing defensively goes against my beliefs,” he said. “We’ve won games before by adapting — like against Manchester City last season — but that’s not who we are.”
He also dismissed claims that Liverpool’s system leaves them too exposed at the back.
“It’s not that we concede chance after chance. Even against Palace, they had three big chances — and all three went in. We’re not too open; we’re just not taking our own chances well enough.”
Slot remains confident that sticking to his football philosophy will eventually bring results.
“There’s no reason to change our entire style. We just need to execute better and stay focused at both ends of the pitch.”

Contract Talks on Hold — Focus Fully on the Pitch
Reports have surfaced suggesting that contract renewal discussions between Slot and the club have been put on hold amid Liverpool’s poor run. But the Dutchman brushed aside such claims, emphasizing that his immediate concern is reviving the team’s form.
“That was the last question I expected,” he laughed. “My focus is on getting Liverpool back to winning ways. Contract talks — if they exist — aren’t something we discuss here. Let’s win again first.”
His calm and composed demeanor reflects his confidence in Liverpool’s project and his belief that this rough patch will soon pass.

The Road Ahead: Liverpool Look to Bounce Back Against Aston Villa
Up next is a crucial test against Aston Villa, one of the most in-form sides in the league. Slot insists that, despite fatigue and injuries, his players have what it takes to deliver a response.
“We have enough players to get a result on Saturday,” he said. “It’s about managing minutes wisely and showing character. This team has done it before — we’ll do it again.”
With three matches in eight days, Liverpool’s resilience and depth will be tested once again. But if Slot’s defiant tone is any indication, he isn’t ready to let go of his ambitions just yet.
“We’ll keep fighting. The results will come,” he concluded.
