Matheus Cunha Says He Will ‘Never Forget’ Michael Carrick’s Tactical Masterclass at Arsenal

Matheus Cunha has revealed he will “never forget” the dramatic comeback victory orchestrated by Michael Carrick as Manchester United stunned Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium last month.

United recovered from conceding twice to secure a thrilling 3-2 triumph, becoming the first side this season to defeat the Gunners on their own turf. Cunha sealed the win in the 87th minute, curling a superb effort into the top corner to complete a memorable turnaround.

Carrick’s Influence Driving United’s Resurgence

While Cunha’s late strike grabbed headlines, he was quick to underline Carrick’s influence in guiding the team through adversity. Another spectacular goal from Patrick Dorgu had already sparked belief, but Cunha insisted the manager’s leadership proved decisive.

Since replacing Ruben Amorim in January, Carrick has overseen five victories from six matches, steering United back into the Premier League’s top four. A narrow 1-0 success over Everton on Monday lifted the Red Devils into fourth place, giving them a three-point cushion over closest rivals Chelsea and Liverpool.

Carrick’s credentials as a player remain formidable. During his 12-year spell at Manchester United, he collected five Premier League titles and a Champions League medal among 18 major honours. Cunha believes that wealth of experience enables the coach to recognise critical moments and respond effectively.

‘He Knows What It Takes to Win’

Speaking to Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte, Cunha emphasised the value Carrick brings beyond tactical preparation. He described his manager as a multiple-time champion who understands the mentality required to succeed at Old Trafford.

Cunha pointed out that Carrick worked under Sir Alex Ferguson, absorbing lessons from one of football’s most decorated figures. According to the Brazilian forward, that background equips Carrick with an instinctive understanding of what representing Manchester United demands.

He suggested that Carrick’s insight into the club’s culture and expectations plays a crucial role in inspiring belief within the squad, particularly in high-pressure situations.

Courage at the Emirates

Arsenal’s formidable home record added extra significance to United’s victory. The Gunners have won 18 of their 21 home fixtures in all competitions this season, including Champions League successes over Atlético Madrid and Bayern Munich. Until United’s visit, no team had left the Emirates with maximum points.

Cunha credited his side’s courage for overcoming such a daunting challenge. He explained that even after falling behind, the players refused to abandon their strategy or lose confidence. Maintaining faith in the tactical plan prepared during the week proved vital.

The Brazilian described the match as career-defining, stating it was the type of performance that leaves a lasting imprint on a player’s journey.

Cunha’s Impact and International Ambitions

Cunha continued his strong form in the win over Everton, delivering a precise crossfield pass to Bryan Mbeumo, who assisted Benjamin Sesko for the game’s only goal. Since completing a £62.5 million move from Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer, Cunha has registered six goals and two assists for United.

Carrick praised the forward’s all-round contribution, highlighting his defensive work as the team withstood sustained pressure. The manager noted that collective effort was essential to secure the result, particularly given the intensity with which Everton applied.

Beyond club commitments, Cunha has ambitions on the international stage. He featured in Brazil’s squad in November and is aiming for selection in the upcoming friendlies against France and Croatia in March.

While he insists his primary focus remains Manchester United’s pursuit of Champions League qualification, Cunha admitted that representing Brazil at a World Cup remains a powerful motivation. He acknowledged the fierce competition for attacking places but expressed confidence in his current form and continued development as he strives to maintain and elevate his performances.
