Former Liverpool striker Emile Heskey has proposed Christian Pulisic as a possible long-term replacement for Mohamed Salah at Liverpool FC. The American international gained Premier League experience during his spell with Chelsea FC before rediscovering his best form in Italy with AC Milan. With uncertainty surrounding Liverpool’s attacking future, Pulisic has emerged as one of several names linked with a potential move to Anfield.
Uncertainty Surrounding Salah’s Future
Although Salah remains under contract with Liverpool until 2027, speculation about his long-term future continues to grow. The Egyptian forward has displayed visible frustration at times this season and has experienced a dip in league productivity, having not scored in the Premier League since November 1.
Clubs in the Saudi Pro League and MLS have reportedly shown interest, and Liverpool would still be able to command a significant transfer fee should they decide to sell. Consequently, discussions regarding potential replacements on the right wing have intensified.
Heskey believes Pulisic could provide a different dynamic to Arne Slot’s attacking structure. He described the USMNT star as a direct and aggressive runner who consistently unsettles defenders. While acknowledging that Pulisic did not produce the goal numbers some anticipated during his Chelsea tenure, Heskey maintained that the winger’s overall influence remained positive.
He also highlighted Pulisic’s performances at the international level. He suggested that a return to England could offer him the opportunity to demonstrate that his earlier Premier League experience was merely a temporary setback. Heskey noted that Pulisic arrived at Chelsea at a young age and may now be better equipped to handle the league’s demands.
Other Names Enter the Frame
Pulisic is not the only attacker linked with Liverpool. Anthony Gordon of Newcastle United has also been mentioned as a possible target. The former Everton FC winger grew up supporting Liverpool, adding another layer of intrigue to the speculation.
Heskey, however, emphasised that directly replacing Salah may not be realistic. He pointed out that even seasons considered underwhelming for the Egyptian still yielded more than 20 goals, illustrating the extraordinary consistency he has maintained.
Instead of seeking a direct replica, Heskey suggested Liverpool may need to reshape their attacking identity. Tactical adjustments under Arne Slot, including the possibility of a midfield diamond, could reduce reliance on traditional wide forwards and demand a different profile of player.
Among the alternatives Heskey admires is Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, currently representing Paris Saint-Germain. He described the Georgian winger as his preferred option if Liverpool pursues a marquee addition.
He also referenced Jarrod Bowen of West Ham United. While admitting that most players would represent a statistical downgrade compared to Salah, Heskey argued that Bowen offers a contrasting work rate and tactical flexibility that could benefit a revised system.
The Scale of the Challenge
Salah’s record at Liverpool underscores the magnitude of the task facing any successor. Across 429 appearances, he has scored 252 goals, won three PFA Player of the Year awards, and collected four Premier League Golden Boots. His honours include two league titles, a Champions League triumph, and multiple domestic cup victories.
Those accomplishments highlight why replacing him on a like-for-like basis may prove impossible. Instead, Liverpool’s strategy may focus on evolving its attacking approach to sustain competitiveness in the seasons ahead.
