Liverpool Could Land Alexander Isak by Walking Away from £70m ‘Free Transfer’ as Player Makes Call

Liverpool may be considering a subtle strategy to secure the signature of Alexander Isak in what could be a blockbuster move.

Following the £116million acquisition of Florian Wirtz, adding a proven world-class striker could significantly strengthen Arne Slot’s squad and put them ahead of their domestic rivals for the foreseeable future.

Bringing in Isak is expected to command another substantial fee, likely crossing the nine-figure threshold. Newcastle United are keen to retain their star forward after clinching a Champions League spot late last season.

However, Liverpool could attempt to earn goodwill from Newcastle by quietly withdrawing from their pursuit of Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, a player also targeted by the Magpies.

Both Premier League clubs are reportedly interested in Guehi, whose contract with Crystal Palace runs until next year. While Palace are believed to value the defender at around £70million, TeamTalk suggests an offer in the region of £45million could be enough to initiate negotiations with the South London side.

Meanwhile, The Guardian claims the England international is prepared to stay at Palace if a satisfactory transfer offer does not materialise.

Guehi is reportedly in no rush to make a decision about his future and may consider running down his current contract, potentially leaving on a free transfer in a year’s time. If that scenario unfolds, Liverpool could see an opportunity to use this situation to their advantage.

The idea being floated is that Liverpool might deliberately end their interest in Guehi, effectively giving Newcastle a clear path to sign the 24-year-old. This gesture of goodwill could help smooth relations between the two clubs and make Newcastle more receptive to negotiations over Isak.

Whether Liverpool will actually pursue this tactic remains uncertain, but it could prove to be their best chance at signing their top striker target.

Despite lifting the Premier League title, Liverpool’s current centre-forward options have lacked consistent goal output, and a player like Isak could be the solution to maintaining their dominance.

Arne Slot is determined to stay ahead of both Arsenal and Manchester City, sides who have also invested heavily to strengthen their squads. Liverpool have already added Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong, and a move for Milos Kerkez could also be on the horizon.

With Ibrahima Konate still firmly partnered with Virgil van Dijk in central defence, it’s the striker position that arguably demands the most urgent reinforcement.

If Liverpool’s Guehi manoeuvre proves successful, it could unlock the pathway for Alexander Isak’s high-profile arrival at Anfield.
