Liverpool are on the verge of finalising a deal to bring Florian Wirtz to Anfield from Bayer Leverkusen.
Bayern Munich’s sporting director, Max Eberl, has admitted his disappointment after the club failed to secure Wirtz’s signature.
The 22-year-old attacking midfielder is nearing a transfer to Liverpool, with the final components of a deal—expected to set a new club record around £114 million—currently being negotiated.
Wirtz’s decision to opt for a move to Liverpool has come as a surprise to many. The German international had long been tipped to join Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich, and Manchester City were also reported to be interested.
However, Liverpool made a late push and surged ahead of both Bayern and City in the race. It’s believed Wirtz was particularly impressed by Arne Slot’s vision for him in the Premier League champions’ setup.
As a result, Bayern—who are preparing for the upcoming expanded Club World Cup—will need to explore alternative options in the transfer market.
Although Eberl has acknowledged that Bayern could not compete with Liverpool financially, he remains optimistic that the club can still identify and sign another ‘outstanding player’.

He said via German newspaper SV: “I don’t know if we could have paid the price that Liverpool now apparently has to pay, It was clear, the entire club communicated, that the player was outstanding.
And that we could very well have imagined him moving to FC Bayern. Now he’s decided differently, even though the talks were very good. Everyone was at the table. But Florian decided otherwise. That’s how it is in the transfer market.
“In the first step, you say, ‘Damn it.’ But one door closes, another opens. Now we’ll reposition ourselves for the future. Florian will make his way at Liverpool. Now we’re trying to find another outstanding player who will be successful with us.”

Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg reports that Florian Wirtz is scheduled to undergo his medical at Liverpool next week. The German international is currently on holiday after featuring twice for his national team in the Nations League during the recent post-season fixtures.
Plettenberg posted on X: “Bayer 04 Leverkusen expect Florian #Wirtz’s move to FC Liverpool to be finalised next week – including the medical, which is scheduled to take place next week at the latest. Wirtz, currently on holiday. #LFC.”
