Alexis Mac Allister Urges Liverpool to Sign ‘World’s Best’ Centre-back

Alexis Mac Allister believes Liverpool should look to bring in the best centre-back in the world—even one he considers to be an upgrade on Virgil van Dijk.

Since his arrival from Southampton in January 2018, Van Dijk has been a colossal presence at Anfield. Liverpool paid a then club-record fee for the Dutchman, and he’s since proven to be worth every bit of that investment.

At the time, the £75 million outlay was viewed as extraordinary for a defender. Even today, that figure remains eye-catching, especially considering several less accomplished centre-backs have commanded similar fees in the years since.

Liverpool’s decision to back their own judgement ultimately paid off. Van Dijk became a transformative figure at the back and has played a pivotal role in helping the club secure every major trophy during his time on Merseyside.

In terms of legacy, Van Dijk will likely be remembered as one of the finest centre-backs to ever wear the Liverpool shirt. Perhaps only Alan Hansen stands as a serious rival in that conversation.

What makes Van Dijk’s story even more remarkable is the way he bounced back from a serious knee injury. Despite that setback, he returned to form in dominant fashion, playing a key role in Liverpool’s strong push for the Premier League title last season as arguably the league’s top defender.

To many, he remains the best in the world. But not everyone shares that view—not even some of those sharing the pitch with him.

Alexis Mac Allister Wants Cristian Romero

While on international duty with Argentina this week, Alexis Mac Allister gave an interview to TNT Sports. When asked which of his international teammates he would like to see at Liverpool, he offered a particularly intriguing response.

“Oh, Cuti [Cristian Romero]. He’s a player I love,” he said.

“The way he speaks and plays, sometimes you feel like he’s too much because he makes everything so easy. He gives me confidence.

“For me, he’s been the best centre-back in the world for several years.”

That last comment is what truly stands out. Calling him the best in the world is quite the statement—though it makes sense that Mac Allister holds the 27-year-old in high regard, having shared success with him in both the World Cup and two Copa América triumphs.

Still, it’s hard to say that Tottenham Hotspurs’ defence impressed enough last season to spark interest in bringing any of their players to Anfield. In fact, it was quite the opposite.

That said, Romero did play a key role in their UEFA Europa League victory, particularly with a standout performance in the final against Manchester United. He certainly has a habit of collecting silverware, and that’s something you can’t ignore.

However, a switch to Liverpool seems unlikely at this point. As things stand, we’re more than content with Van Dijk holding down the back line.
