Confirmed: Club Manager Says Liverpool Want to Sign ‘One of the Best Strikers in the World’

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has acknowledged that Liverpudlians are contenders in the race to sign Julian Alvarez this summer, though he chose to view the situation positively, describing it as a ‘point of pride’ for the La Liga side.

The Reds have already secured the signing of Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen for £29.5 million and appear close to landing his teammate Florian Wirtz in what would represent a club-record transfer. They are also pursuing Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth, suggesting another promising season lies ahead on Merseyside.

Simeone: Liverpool ‘Interested’ in Julian Alvarez

However, the Reds may still have further business to conduct. With Darwin Nunez anticipated to depart this summer, Diogo Jota would remain the sole recognised striker at the club, potentially prompting Arne Slot to strengthen his attacking options.

Alvarez has been the subject of transfer speculation in recent months, having already made a strong impression in the Premier League and continued that form in La Liga, where Atletico gave both Barcelona and Real Madrid a respectable challenge in the title race. His performances have earned him recognition as ‘one of the best strikers in the world’.

Simeone has now confirmed Atletico’s interest, as sporting director Richard Hughes prepares for a major overhaul of the squad during the transfer window. He stated:

“Every club wants to sign Julián Álvarez.”

“It’s logical. I can’t imagine it any other way. Of course every top club wants him—Barcelona, PSG, Arsenal, Liverpool… all of them. And for us, for Atlético fans, it should be a point of pride that everyone wants him.

“Why? Because he’s ours. And since he’s ours, we need to protect him. We have to make sure he feels happy. And how will he feel happy? By winning. And to get there, we all need to give 110%. Not just for him, of course—for everyone.

“He is 25 years old, an extraordinary player—hungry, humble, hardworking, a goal-scorer, and full of class.”

Alvarez scored 20 goals in just 67 Premier League appearances for Manchester City, a notable achievement considering he spent much of that time as understudy to Erling Haaland. His overall tally of 36 goals in 103 matches across all competitions highlights an even more impressive return.
