Liverpool Confirm Second Summer Transfer as Highly-rated Hungary Star Joins Reds

Liverpool have completed the signing of goalkeeper Armin Pecsi from Hungarian outfit Puskas Akademia. The 20-year-old has made the switch to the Reds for a fee of £1.5million after undergoing a medical and putting pen to paper on Saturday.

Pecsi is set to become part of Liverpool’s under-21 squad, though he will also have the opportunity to train with senior goalkeepers Alisson Becker and recent arrival Giorgi Mamardashvili.

His move comes in the wake of Caoimhin Kelleher’s departure, as the Irishman joined Brentford for £18million to become their new number one.

Despite his age, Pecsi brings considerable experience, having made 52 senior appearances for Puskas Akademia, during which he kept 15 clean sheets. He featured 30 times during the 2024/25 campaign, playing a key role in helping the Hungarian side secure a second-place finish in their domestic league.

On the international stage, he has earned five caps for Hungary’s under-21 team and was shortlisted for the 2025 Golden Boy award, highlighting his rising profile.

He now becomes the second Hungarian in the Liverpool squad, joining midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai. That number could rise to three, as Liverpool are actively pursuing a deal for Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez.

Kerkez recently withdrew from Hungary’s squad ahead of their clash with Azerbaijan due to undisclosed ‘private reasons’. It is believed the decision is linked to ongoing negotiations regarding his transfer to Liverpool, with all parties keen to prevent any late setbacks caused by injury.

Pecsi is Liverpool’s second addition of the summer, following the arrival of Jeremie Frimpong. The Dutch full-back agreed a five-year contract after Liverpool triggered his £29.5million release clause at Bayer Leverkusen, a move prompted by Trent Alexander-Arnold’s transfer to Real Madrid.

As for Mamardashvili, although he was technically signed last summer, he spent the 2024/25 season on loan at Valencia. He will now officially become part of Arne Slot’s squad, taking up the role of second-choice goalkeeper behind Alisson.

Liverpool are still engaged in negotiations with Bayer Leverkusen over a potential British-record transfer for Florian Wirtz. The Reds have tabled an offer worth £113million, comprising £100million upfront and an additional £13million in performance-related bonuses. However, the proposal falls short of Leverkusen’s £126.4million (€150million) valuation of the German playmaker.

In other developments, Liverpool have confirmed the release of seven players. Dominic Corness, Louis Enahoro-Marcus, Harry Evers, Lee Jonas, Jakub Ojrzynski, Jacob Poytress and Reece Trueman have all left the club. None of them featured for the first team, and they will now look for opportunities elsewhere following the club’s Premier League title win.

Additional exits are anticipated, with Darwin Nunez, Harvey Elliott, Andy Robertson and Federico Chiesa among those who might move on. Chiesa, who arrived from Juventus last summer in a £10million deal, has found regular minutes hard to come by under Arne Slot and is now seeking a transfer.

He told Corriere dello Sport: “At the beginning I felt the frustration of the radical change and of being far behind the group, then there was the injury. Could I start to discuss the choices of Slot who has always been very respectful towards me, as well as the club? The desire to play was there, I put it aside, I understood the situation.”
