“He’d Like to Go to Liverpool” – Director Talks About Player’s Eagerness to Join Reds, Expects Transfer Will Go Through

Liverpool are showing strong interest in Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz, with ongoing efforts being made to secure his signature during the current transfer window.

Earlier this week, Bild reported that Liverpool’s owners, FSG, have given their approval for CEO Michael Edwards to proceed with a €150 million offer to sign Wirtz. This development followed Leverkusen’s rejection of an initial €130 million bid from the Reds.

On Wednesday, Wirtz’s teammate Aleix García urged him to choose Liverpool instead of Bayern Munich, who are also vying for the player’s services.

German football association (DFB) sporting director Rudi Völler recently shared his thoughts on the Liverpool target during an interview with DAZN, as relayed by Sport1.

Völler spent over 20 years at Bayer Leverkusen in several capacities, including a long stint as sporting director from 2005 to 2018.

He was part of the club’s setup when Wirtz was signed from 1. FC Köln for their academy in 2020, before moving on to take up the DFB sporting director position in February 2023.

According to Völler, the 22-year-old has a desire to join the Premier League giants, and he believes talks between the two clubs could be prolonged.

“It’s no secret that he’d like to go to Liverpool. I know the clubs are negotiating with each other,” he said.

“[But with] transfers like this [it’s] often the case that it takes a while until an agreement is finally reached. Of course, in the end, you have the feeling it will go through.”

Wirtz managed 16 goals and 15 assists from 45 games this season and Völler is pleased with his rise at Bayer Leverkusen.

“Florian Wirtz has proven that he’s a very, very valuable player. Not just for Leverkusen, but also for the national team. That’s why he costs a few euros more,” Völler explained.
