Jamie Carragher Tells Liverpool Who to Sign Next After Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez

Jamie Carragher has shared his opinion on Liverpool’s summer transfer strategy, particularly their interest in Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez.

Carragher believes that once Liverpool complete possible deals for Wirtz and Kerkez, their next focus will be on bringing in a new centre-forward. The Merseysiders have already secured the signing of Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen, following Trent Alexander-Arnold’s move to Real Madrid. Discussions are also ongoing with the German club regarding a record-breaking transfer for Wirtz.

Liverpool have seen two offers for Wirtz turned down by Leverkusen, with the latest bid reaching £109 million. Despite the rejections, there is still optimism from all sides that an agreement can be reached during the summer window.

At the same time, the Merseysiders are intensifying their pursuit of Milos Kerkez from AFC Bournemouth, aiming to bolster their options at left-back.

Carragher has repeatedly stated in recent months that Liverpool need to bring in five or six new players to strengthen Arne Slot’s squad, especially after reclaiming the Premier League title.

With Liverpool now actively targeting both an attacking midfielder and a left-back in Wirtz and Kerkez—two roles Carragher had earlier urged the club to address—the former defender has now suggested that signing a striker should be their next move.

“I still believe Liverpool need the number of players I’m talking about,” he said The Overlap Fan Debate, brought to you by Sky Bet. “It looks to me like he’s thinking, ‘Okay, let’s get the players in the team,’ because I think the left-back plays, who comes in.

“Frimpong will fight, or a good chance of playing with Conor Bradley, Florian Wirtz plays if he comes to the club, but I still think we need a centre forward.

“I think Liverpool will look to get their business done really early. Because I think if they haven’t signed anyone for a year, we know how Liverpool, they’ll be in the background speaking to the agents six months ago.

“We need a left-back. Andy Robertson needs help on that side. Tsimikas will probably move on.

“I’ve always felt attacking midfield and left-back are the two areas that have really jumped out to me, I think, for probably 12-18 months.

“And it looks to me as if like, okay, left-back, Florian Wirtz, whether he plays in Szoboszlai’s role or he plays from the left, I don’t know. I think he could play a number of positions.

“But I think the next one is centre-forward. I wouldn’t be surprised if once Liverpool get these two or three done, the next one is the centre-forward…

“And then I think as the window goes on, Liverpool will just see who they can sell, what they can do.

“They might bring in another midfield player, another centre-back, to back up really. They’ll assess what the situation is.”
