Nkunku and Nunez Swap Deal Could Suit All Parties
Liverpool are reportedly planning to part ways with Darwin Nunez this summer. The Uruguayan forward has spent three years at Anfield, but following an inconsistent spell, he now appears likely to depart.
When Nunez initially signed for Liverpool, the club’s data analysts had favoured players like Alexander Isak and Christopher Nkunku instead. However, then-manager Jurgen Klopp preferred Nunez, leading to an eventual agreement with Benfica that could rise to £85 million.
With both Nkunku and Nunez struggling to find form at Chelsea and Liverpool respectively, a swap deal between the two clubs this summer could prove beneficial for all sides.
Reports from France suggest that Newcastle United and Bayern Munich are also monitoring Nkunku, but Liverpool offering Nunez as a direct replacement might tip the balance in their favour.
Although Nkunku has underperformed in terms of goals, interest from two clubs set to play Champions League football next season reflects ongoing belief in his ability. A move away from Stamford Bridge may offer the fresh start he needs to reignite his career.
Why Would Chelsea Want Darwin Nunez?
The Stamford Bridge club have previously expressed interest in the Uruguayan forward, who has demonstrated glimpses of exceptional talent at Liverpool.
A change of scenery might offer him the right conditions to flourish. Capable of operating both centrally and on the left wing, the attacker brings tactical flexibility that could be beneficial for Blues boss Enzo Maresca.
Chelsea are aiming to secure Champions League qualification for the upcoming season, which would require a deep and capable squad to meet the added demands. In the current campaign, the Europa Conference League has posed little difficulty for the team, and they now stand just one victory away from lifting the trophy.
Nevertheless, even participation in the Europa League would necessitate sufficient squad depth. With a limited number of strikers available on the transfer market, Nunez might serve as a fitting replacement for Nkunku, who has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter.
Over the past two Premier League seasons, Nunez has outscored Nkunku, making him a potentially appealing backup to Nicolas Jackson. Both Nunez and Nkunku are in need of a fresh start to revive their stagnating careers — and a direct swap between the two could offer the solution.
