Alex Ferguson’s Liverpool Prediction Has Finally Come True and Would Later Terr!fy Gary Neville

Sir Alex Ferguson’s prediction about Liverpool from nearly ten years ago has now materialised, and the implications of the legendary Manchester United manager’s foresight would eventually unsettle Gary Neville.

Liverpool’s most recent Premier League success has brought renewed attention to a chilling prediction made by Sir Alex Ferguson.

The former Manchester United boss, known for his confident pronouncements, had long backed Jurgen Klopp to transform Liverpool into a title-winning side, years before the German guided them to their first Premier League trophy in 2020.

Ferguson also described Klopp as the “perfect” candidate for the Anfield role—a judgment that appears uncannily accurate in hindsight, considering that nearly the entire current Liverpool squad under Arne Slot was either signed or developed by Klopp.

Jamie Carragher revealed that Ferguson was, surprisingly, among the few figures outside Liverpool who genuinely believed Klopp could end the club’s long wait for a league title when he arrived in 2015.

At that time, the Reds had finished 26 points adrift of champions Chelsea and seemed a far cry from the team that had narrowly missed the title in 2013/14.

However, Klopp swiftly changed the club’s fortunes, elevating them to elite status both domestically and in Europe. His tenure included a Champions League triumph in 2019 and a long-awaited league title the following year.

This led Carragher to later reflect on Ferguson’s foresight in an article for the Daily Telegraph: “Outside Anfield, there was only one high-profile figure in the game who tried to convince me Klopp could bring the title to Anfield.

“I should have listened to Sir Alex Ferguson. I will never forget meeting Sir Alex when I played in Michael Carrick’s testimonial in June, 2017. ‘You’ve got yourself a manager, there,’ Fergie told me.

“It was the look he gave me, which was most revealing, as he explained how impressed he had been with Klopp during Champions League coaching seminars… He felt, and exhibited, no inferiority complex, and Ferguson intuitively knew he was perfect for Liverpool.”

Klopp may not have secured a second league title, but he maintained Liverpool’s competitiveness until the very end—a fact that deeply unsettled Gary Neville.

In 2022, the Manchester United icon confessed how “scary” it was to see both Klopp and Pep Guardiola so firmly established at their respective clubs.

“The worry for the rest [of the Premier League] is, that I thought these two managers would be gone two or three seasons ago,” Neville said on The Overlap. “I thought ‘they’re going to do four years, five years, and then they’ll go, that next challenge will come – Barcelona, Real Madrid, wherever the next challenge is’.

“The problem is now they’ve both embedded themselves into these two clubs. They recognise that the league is the best it’s ever been, the rest of the leagues in Europe aren’t in a stronger position.

“The clubs that they’re at are giving them everything that they want and more, and they’re now going to be here for another three years maybe, four years – and that’s the scary thing.”

Ultimately, Klopp stepped aside two years after Neville made his remarks. However, Slot’s impressive beginning hasn’t emerged out of thin air—it’s a continuation of Klopp’s final season, during which Liverpool accumulated 82 points despite injuries and various squad issues.

Slot has entered an exclusive group as the 12th manager to claim the Premier League title and one of only five to achieve it in their debut English campaign.

While he may have equalled Klopp’s points total, it’s clear that the foundation was laid by the German, who left behind a “scary” framework that has allowed Liverpool to remain a formidable force among Manchester United’s rivals.
