Gary Neville Steps Down from Sky Sports Duties After Liverpool Won Premier League Title

Manchester United legend Gary Neville was unable to carry out his usual Sky Sports responsibilities as Liverpool clinched the Premier League title on Sunday.

Neville declined an offer to join the Sky Sports punditry team for coverage of Liverpool’s anticipated Premier League title celebrations following their match against Tottenham Hotspur. Although he provided co-commentary for the game at Anfield, he also took part in the pre-match discussions with David Jones, Jamie Redknapp and Daniel Sturridge.

Liverpool went on to demolish Spurs 5-1, securing their 20th English top-flight title and drawing level with Manchester United, more than a decade after Sir Alex Ferguson had famously claimed to have knocked Liverpool off their perch.

Luis Diaz, Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah all found the net, with Destiny Udogie scoring an own goal, as Liverpool took full control after Dominic Solanke had given Spurs a brief lead. As fans celebrated a Premier League triumph with the players for the first time, Neville was notably absent from the full-time festivities.

Typically, Sky Sports co-commentators return after the final whistle to participate in post-match analysis and discussions.

However, when David Jones asked Neville ahead of the match whether he would join the panel if Liverpool managed to secure the necessary point against Spurs, Neville made it clear he would not be taking part.

He responded: “No. There is no point in me coming down here again. I think the Liverpool fans probably won’t let me get out of the commentary box!”

Liverpool have at last caught up with their fierce rivals, who have endured a steady decline over the ten years following Sir Alex Ferguson’s victorious retirement in 2013.

Fittingly, as the Anfield side celebrates their triumph, Manchester United are enduring the worst season in their Premier League history.

Ruben Amorim’s team languishes in 14th place, having already set unwanted records for their lowest league finish, fewest points accumulated, and most defeats suffered.

Appearing before the match, Neville highlighted the significance of Liverpool’s title success and provided a scathing assessment of how it would impact the atmosphere at Old Trafford.

“It is a massive deal,” Neville explained after describing the day as “sobering”.

“When you think of the importance of a league title, the managers at Liverpool and United always talk about your bread and butter being the league.

“You could debate the most successful club when United were on 20.

‘Obviously, Liverpool have more European Cups, but the painful thing to say is the debate is over for a period until United become successful again and win leagues.

“It should cause real tremors at Old Trafford. Liverpool will be the most successful club after today, and that should cause heartache and pain. It took a lot to get ahead of Liverpool, and now that will be gone.”
