Slot Tells Liverpool to Pay £33m for ‘Lethal’ Right-back After ‘Spectacular’ Alexander-Arnold Decision

Liverpool’s head coach, Arne Slot, has reportedly urged the club’s hierarchy to pursue the signing of Jeremie Frimpong as a potential successor to Trent Alexander-Arnold.
According to TEAMtalk, discussions have emerged regarding Bayer Leverkusen’s stance on selling the right-back in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Alexander-Arnold, who progressed through Liverpool’s academy to become a key figure in the first team, has enjoyed significant success over the years.
The right-back has amassed 349 appearances for the Merseyside club, contributing 22 goals and 87 assists. Throughout Jürgen Klopp’s tenure, the England international has secured multiple trophies, including the Premier League, FA Cup, EFL Cup, and Champions League.
Currently, with Liverpool holding a commanding 12-point lead over second-placed Arsenal in the Premier League, Alexander-Arnold appears poised to add another winner’s medal to his collection this season.
Despite this success, reports strongly indicate that the right-back may not remain at Anfield beyond the summer, with Spanish sources insisting that Alexander-Arnold has already committed to joining Real Madrid.
It is believed that the defender has rejected a contract extension from Liverpool and has opted to move to Madrid on a free transfer at the end of the season.
A fresh report from DefensaCentral supports these claims, stating that Alexander-Arnold is set to join Real Madrid as a free agent. The report highlights the significance of the transfer, noting that at just 26 years old, the player still has a lengthy career ahead of him.
The same publication also claims that Liverpool’s manager has identified a replacement for Alexander-Arnold.
Slot, who appears to be coming to terms with the prospect of losing the England international, has reportedly informed Fenway Sports Group (FSG) of his desire to sign Bayer Leverkusen’s Frimpong.
According to the report, Slot considers his fellow Dutchman the ideal candidate for the right-back position and has urged the club’s leadership to activate his release clause, which is valued at €40 million (£33.5 million, $43.5 million).
Meanwhile, DefensaCentral has disclosed that Real Madrid had also expressed interest in Frimpong. The right-back has been highly praised by Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman, who described him as both “amazing” and “lethal,” while also emphasizing that “his speed is an amazing weapon.”
However, since Los Blancos are now on course to sign Alexander-Arnold, they no longer need to pursue Frimpong.
Bayer Leverkusen Ready to Sell Jeremie Frimpong
TEAMtalk’s transfer correspondent, Rudy Galetti, reported on February 19 that Liverpool have expressed interest in signing Jeremie Frimpong in the summer transfer window.
According to sources, reigning Premier League champions Manchester City are also keeping a close eye on the 24-year-old Netherlands international right-back.
Frimpong, who developed through Manchester City’s youth academy, made the switch to Bayer Leverkusen from Celtic in 2021 and has since established himself as a key player at the German club.
The right-back played a crucial role in Bayer’s Bundesliga title victory last season and has continued to impress, recording four goals and 11 assists in 40 appearances this campaign.
TEAMtalk understands that Frimpong has a ‘gentlemen’s agreement’ with Bayer Leverkusen, allowing the club to consider offers of €40 million (£33.5 million, $43.5 million) this summer, despite his release clause—active last year—having now expired.
Additionally, sources suggest that Frimpong remains on Real Madrid’s shortlist as a potential alternative if they are unable to secure Alexander-Arnold’s signature.
