Liverpool have reportedly begun preparations for the summer transfer window, with strengthening the left-back position among their key priorities.
With Andy Robertson now in his 30s, the club is eager to find a long-term successor. According to Jornal de Notícias, one of the leading candidates on their shortlist is Benfica’s Álvaro Carreras.
While Premier League options such as Fulham’s Antonee Robinson and Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez have been linked with a move to Anfield, Liverpool are also considering alternatives outside England. Carreras, who has impressed at Benfica, has now emerged as a strong contender.
The 21-year-old Spanish full-back has steadily progressed in European football. After beginning his youth career at Real Madrid, he joined Manchester United in 2020.
Despite his potential, he never made a senior appearance for the Red Devils, instead gaining experience through loan spells at Preston North End and Granada.
In January 2024, Benfica signed Carreras on loan with a purchase clause that became mandatory if he played in at least 50% of the club’s remaining matches.
His impressive performances quickly convinced the Portuguese side to make the move permanent, securing him for €6 million, with an additional €3 million in potential add-ons.
Since joining Benfica, he has become an important player for the team, scoring three goals and providing four assists in 33 appearances across all competitions.

His ability to contribute both defensively and offensively has caught the attention of several top European clubs, including Liverpool.
Liverpool Face Competition for Carreras’ Signature
Liverpool have reportedly reached out to Benfica to explore the possibility of signing Carreras. However, they face stiff competition, as Bayern Munich, Chelsea, and Paris Saint-Germain have also shown strong interest in the defender, setting up a highly competitive race for his signature.
As the summer transfer window draws closer, it remains uncertain whether Liverpool will step up their pursuit with a formal offer.
If they succeed in securing his services, Carreras could mark the beginning of a new era at left-back, eventually succeeding Robertson in the years ahead.
