Real Madrid Accept Defeat in Trent Alexander-Arnold Pursuit in Major Liverpool Twist
Real Madrid have reportedly conceded defeat in their pursuit of Trent Alexander-Arnold. The Spanish club have reportedly abandoned any hopes of securing the right-back’s transfer during the January window.
Although Alexander-Arnold’s contract at Anfield is set to expire at the end of the season, allowing him to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with other clubs, Madrid’s efforts to sign him this month have been unsuccessful.
Liverpool are now focused on using the coming months to persuade their homegrown talent to commit his future to the club.
The Liverpool academy graduate remains a crucial player for his boyhood club, despite not featuring in the Champions League victory over Madrid in November.
Liverpool have enjoyed an impressive campaign, winning all seven of their league phase matches, while Madrid’s progress depends on favourable results to secure a top-eight finish.
Dani Carvajal’s injury prompted Los Blancos to intensify their pursuit of Alexander-Arnold. However, it appears Carlo Ancelotti’s side will have to wait, with a potential summer transfer still on the table.
According to Marca, Madrid will not be making any signings before the winter transfer window closes. They also had a quiet summer, with only Kylian Mbappe and Endrick joining the squad.
Despite their ongoing interest in Alexander-Arnold, who shares a close friendship with international teammate Jude Bellingham, the lack of a January deal means Madrid will continue to rely on Lucas Vazquez, Fede Valverde, and Raul Asencio as their right-back options.
Alexander-Arnold has played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s rise to the top of the Premier League and Champions League standings, despite occasional setbacks, such as the recent league draw with Manchester United.
However, he continues to enjoy the support of manager Arne Slot. “Trent has played mostly very good games for the club. Today was not his best game but that had to do with them as well,” Slot said after the United match.
The right-back was given a rest as Slot’s side faced PSV in their final Champions League group stage match under the new format.
With Liverpool already assured of finishing top of the group, the subsequent 3-2 defeat is unlikely to be a significant concern for Slot’s team.
The Reds now have the potential to face PSG, Benfica, Brest, or Monaco in the last 16 of the competition.
