Liverpool boss Arne Slot has heaped praise on centre-back Virgil van Dijk following their match against Ipswich Town at Anfield.

Hungarian midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai opened the scoring for Liverpool in the 11th minute, with Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah doubling the lead in the 35th minute.

Dutch forward Cody Gakpo added two goals to the tally, ensuring Liverpool collected all three points with minimal difficulty.

“Bringing the ball out from the back, defending, his composure, he’s definitely a leader. As a manager, I haven’t worked with a lot of players that can say they are a leader, but Virgil is definitely a leader.

“Not only on the pitch, but also on the training ground. The moment we start the training, he is the loudest one and always leads by example. He is having a fantastic season, but I think he has already seven, eight fantastic seasons as well.”

Van Dijk’s contract with Liverpool is set to expire at the end of the season, and no new agreement has been reached yet.

It is imperative for Liverpool to address this issue. The Premier League leaders must offer Van Dijk a new deal.

Although Van Dijk is now 33 years old, he continues to perform at an exceptional level and remains as reliable as ever.

The Dutch defender is one of the first names on Arne Slot’s teamsheet, showing no signs of decline in his performances.

The former Southampton and Celtic centre-back has contributed 23 goals, provided eight assists, and helped keep 111 clean sheets in those matches.

During his time with Liverpool, Van Dijk has won both the Premier League and the Champions League.
