Liverpool Have ‘Absolute Bargain’ £20m January Transfer Opportunity as Contract Claims Made

Richard Hughes has spoken about being opportunistic in the transfer market since becoming Liverpool’s sporting director, and a cut-price deal appears available.

Liverpool have been active in the transfer market since Richard Hughes assumed the role of sporting director before the season began.

During an introductory press conference in early July, Hughes stated, “With the window open, we’ll always be opportunistic if we can.”

Federico Chiesa subsequently joined the Reds from Juventus for £10 million, following a £25 million agreement to sign Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Liverpool also attempted to activate Martin Zubimendi’s £51 million release clause to secure his transfer from Real Sociedad.

Although the Zubimendi deal did not materialise, Hughes demonstrated his commitment to this approach. This strategy appears set to continue during the winter transfer window.

Rayan Cherki is reportedly available for under £20 million this year, a figure described by several unnamed executives as an “absolute bargain.”

Sky Germany reports that Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, and multiple English clubs are closely monitoring the situation due to Lyon’s financial struggles.

Liverpool’s interest in Cherki is longstanding, dating back to last year. Chelsea have also previously been linked with the player.

With a £25 million market value on transfermarkt, Lyon’s asking price is reportedly below the France under-21 international’s estimated worth, making him a potentially attractive prospect for Hughes.

In the meantime, reports from abroad suggest that Liverpool’s sporting director has already secured one major deal this month. Virgil van Dijk is said to have decided to extend his stay at Liverpool.

According to Fichajes, the club captain have agreed to a two-year contract extension that will keep him at Anfield until 2027.

Van Dijk is one of three Liverpool players in the final six months of their current contracts, with Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold being the others.

Salah and Alexander-Arnold are reportedly attracting significant interest from Paris Saint-Germain (along with Al-Hilal in the Saudi Pro League) and Real Madrid, respectively. However, there have been fewer reports speculating about Van Dijk’s future.
