‘I’d be Shøçkēd’ – Paul Merson Drops New Liverpool Title Verdict After ‘Massive’ Arsenal Result
Paul Merson has shared his thoughts on Liverpool’s chances of winning the Premier League following a pivotal weekend for both the Reds and Arsenal. The pundit admitted he would be surprised if the title race outcome changed by the end of the season.
Liverpool enjoyed one of their best weekends in the league, earning a 2-0 win over Brentford thanks to two stoppage-time goals from Darwin Núñez. In contrast, Arsenal dropped points in a dramatic encounter with Aston Villa.
Mikel Arteta’s side let a 2-0 lead slip at home, eventually drawing 2-2 after Mikel Merino’s late goal was disallowed by VAR. This result left the Gunners six points behind Liverpool, who also have a game in hand.
Speaking on Sky Sports after Arsenal’s draw at the Emirates, Merson stated he would be “shocked” if Liverpool failed to clinch the Premier League title this season, given the weekend’s developments.
On the title race, the pundit said: “With Liverpool scoring two goals in injury time and Arsenal doing that, the swing is massive. I’d be shocked if Liverpool didn’t go on to win the title from here.”
Brentford manager Thomas Frank has described Liverpool as the best team in the world, stating that the Reds are “a level above” both Arsenal and Manchester City. His comments come after the Bees recently faced all three teams.
Although Liverpool have experienced a few setbacks against sides like Manchester United and Nottingham Forest, their prospects in 2025 are beginning to improve significantly.
With Arne Slot’s side still the clear favourites to claim the title, Liverpool face mounting pressure to deliver. However, this challenge has been eased somewhat by the inability of their rivals to maintain the same level of consistency.
The Reds secured a crucial victory over Brentford following setbacks in their previous two Premier League matches.
Observers are beginning to acknowledge that Slot’s team remains firmly in the title race and increasingly appears to be the favourites to win the league.
