Martin Keown Names Key Matches Where Liverpool Could Slip in the Premier League Title Race
Liverpool are widely regarded as the ‘big favourites’ to secure the Premier League title this season, but their path to glory may not be straightforward as they face a string of challenging away fixtures.
This is the view of Arsenal legend Martin Keown, who remains optimistic about his former club’s chances of claiming the trophy in May.
With Chelsea enduring a winless run spanning four matches, many now consider the title race to be a two-team contest between Liverpool and Arsenal. The Merseyside club currently holds a six-point lead with a game in hand.
However, Liverpool missed an opportunity to extend their advantage after a surprising draw against arch-rivals Manchester United on Sunday. The match nearly ended in defeat for Liverpool in the dying moments of injury time.
Despite this setback, Arne Slot’s formidable squad has suffered just one defeat in 28 matches across all competitions this season. In contrast, Arsenal have struggled with consistency amid ongoing injury concerns.
Previously, Keown expressed doubt about Arsenal’s ability to overtake Liverpool in the title race. However, after a closer inspection of Liverpool’s upcoming fixtures, he now believes there is still a glimmer of hope for Mikel Arteta’s side.
“There’s a lot of fixtures that Liverpool have yet to accomplish to be champions,’ the former England defender told talkSPORT.
“Yes, the halfway mark they look like they’re running away with it but they’ve got to go to some very difficult away games as Arsenal have found against Brighton. Brighton spent £200million last summer, that’s not an easy place to go to.
“I think Liverpool have that momentum though. I was a little bit surprised yesterday [against Man Utd], that might have dented their confidence a little bit. They’re certainly big favourites to win it but there’s too far to go. 19 games to go.
“They’ve got to go to Man City, go to [Aston] Villa, go to what is a tricky place now in Bournemouth who have beaten Man City, Spurs and Arsenal.
“They’ve got to play [Nottingham] Forest, the only team that they’ve lost to this season, away from home. They’ve got to go to Fulham and Chelsea, these are difficult away games that Arsenal have already played.
“Second-half of the season, they’ve got a lot of tricky games. They’ll want to have won it by the time Arsenal turn up at the end of the season.”
As noted, Arsenal have already faced these fixtures, except for their away match against Nottingham Forest, securing only six points out of a possible 15.
The Gunners are scheduled to visit Anfield on 10 May, and with only two matches remaining after that, this game could prove decisive in the title race—provided it hasn’t been settled by then.
Keown emphasises that the Reds are still his favourites to win, adding: “I really think Liverpool look different class, the front three look really outstanding right now.
“[Mohamed] Salah, [Cody] Gakpo, you saw the quality of his goal yesterday, so they look the favourites right now. It’s about Arsenal, Saka is a huge loss for them.”
For the time being, Premier League action pauses briefly, with Liverpool set to face Tottenham in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night, followed by a home clash against Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup on Saturday.
