“They Punish You” – Spurs Skipper Son Heung-min Explains Why Liverpool are Top of Premier League After “Painful” Admission

Son Heung-min has shared his thoughts on facing Liverpool, with the Tottenham captain expressing admiration for the performance of the current Premier League leaders.

A dejected Son Heung-min admitted that Tottenham’s 6-3 defeat to Liverpool was “very, very painful” after the league frontrunners delivered a dominant display at the Tottenham Stadium.

Mohamed Salah spearheaded the attack with two goals, matched by Luis Diaz, while Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai also added their names to the scoresheet.

Despite goals from James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, and Dominic Solanke, Spurs were left to reflect on a humbling loss on home soil.

Speaking to Sky Sports in a post-match interview, the Tottenham captain was candid in his assessment, acknowledging that Arne Slot’s side had been the superior team on the day.

Son lamented: “I’m very disappointed with the result and conceding six at home is not the idea. It’s really, really painful. What can I say? As a footballer you always want to play but we’ve got to work hard and recover but we don’t want to make any excuses.”

When quizzed about Liverpool’s quality, Son acknowledged their superiority, saying: “There’s no question. They are top of the league you can see. Top players, top discipline. There’s a reason they are top (of the Premier League). If you make any mistake, they punish you. They are a very very good side.”

In the aftermath of the defeat, Tottenham’s bold style of play has faced criticism, with manager Ange Postecoglou’s tactical adaptability being questioned, particularly in light of the absence of 10 first-team players.

Son, the Tottenham Hotspur forward, expressed his thoughts: “Football is always risky. When you sit back you sometimes concede goals.

“This is our plan so we’ve got to stick together in the good times and also the difficult times. Today was very painful for the players, fans and club. But we’ve got to move together and bounce back stronger.”

Son’s assessment of Liverpool is spot on. Defeating Spurs is one thing, but scoring six goals—and it could easily have been more—sends an entirely different message. The Reds were outstanding, especially in the first half, and fully deserved their commanding victory.
