‘We All Agree’: Luis Garcia Says ‘Something is Missing’ with Liverpool Player After Watching Him vs Girona
Liverpool continued their flawless run in the UEFA Champions League under the guidance of Arne Slot, earning a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Girona on their home turf.
In an engaging encounter, Mohamed Salah converted a penalty in the second half to score the game’s only goal, helping the Reds overcome a determined performance from the hosts and claim all three points.
The victory secured Liverpool’s progression to the Round of 16 with two matches to spare and marked their fifth consecutive clean sheet in European competition under the Dutch manager.
Despite their strong performance away from home, Luis Garcia criticized one Liverpool player, highlighting a lack of composure during the clash against Girona.
Luis Garcia Says Liverpool Striker Darwin Nunez Lacks Composure
Darwin Nunez has been leading Liverpool’s attack in recent weeks, stepping up in the absence of Diogo Jota, who has been sidelined for much of the season due to a rib injury.
Operating as a central striker, flanked by Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah, the Uruguayan forward had another opportunity to showcase his abilities to the Anfield supporters.
Despite his efforts, Nunez faced a frustrating outing, missing a couple of chances to open the scoring before halftime, leaving fans yearning for a decisive finish.
While his relentless running and hard work for the team were evident, his ability to capitalise on scoring opportunities remained a point of concern.
Luis Garcia weighed in on Nunez’s performance, expressing disappointment over the striker’s finishing and composure in the penalty area, noting that these aspects have shown little improvement since his arrival at the club.
“It’s the story with Darwin Nunez,” said Garcia on ESPN FC’s YouTube channel.
“We all agree – his work rate is fantastic – he’s helping the team because he’s always trying to push the opponent but we’re missing the last part – the scoring rate.
“It’s something we’ve been waiting for for the past years but it’s not arriving. He can score goals but he’s not a player who can maybe score 25-30 goals.
“Something is missing there and we’re still waiting. Every single game he gets one, two, or three chances and he’s missing the last part. He’s missing a little bit of composure in the last moment.”
Nunez’s Stats vs Girona
Stephen Warnock expressed his disappointment with Darwin Nunez for failing to convert his chances for Liverpool, as the striker once again ended the match without a goal.
The statistical data from the game highlights the reasons behind the criticism from both Warnock and Luis Garcia, shedding light on Nunez’s missed opportunities.
- 71 minutes played
- 16 touches
- 50% pass completion rate
- 2 big chances missed
- 1 shot off target
- 0 chances created
With Diogo Jota now fully fit, it remains to be seen if Nunez keeps his place in the team when Liverpool take on Fulham at Anfield on Saturday.
