“Stop Following Me'” – Jamie Carragher Reacts to Liverpool Fans Backlash Over Cole Palmer Praise
Jamie Carragher has addressed criticism from Liverpool fans regarding his praise for Chelsea’s Cole Palmer, who some claim he highlighted while intentionally disregarding Mohamed Salah.
The former Liverpool defender responded on social media, expressing frustration over the backlash he received for his comments about Palmer.
Carragher commended the Chelsea star following his two successful penalty conversions during Chelsea’s 4-2 victory against Tottenham on Sunday. The win brought Chelsea within four points of Liverpool at the top of the Premier League standings.
Palmer’s brace elevated his goal tally for the season to 11, trailing only Mohamed Salah and Erling Haaland by two goals. Having finished the previous season as the second-highest scorer with 22 goals, Carragher argued that Palmer’s impressive form since his move to Chelsea in the summer of 2023 has been unparalleled in the league.
“I loved him last season, and he’s started this season really well,” Carragher told Sky Sports. “If you look at his almost 18 months at Chelsea, I don’t think there’s been a player in the Premier League that’s performed better than him over these 18 months.
“And he hasn’t been playing for the best team, though they look like one of the best teams in the league right now.
“He’s probably on the same sort of level as what I saw Eden Hazard do, though over a longer period of time [for Hazard], four or five years.”
Liverpool fans criticised Carragher’s remarks, accusing him of ignoring Mohamed Salah’s contributions. Salah has been in exceptional form this season, with 13 goals and eight assists in the Premier League, amassing 27 goal involvements in just 21 appearances across all competitions.
The criticism follows earlier controversy when Carragher labeled Salah “selfish” for discussing his contract situation before crucial matches against Real Madrid and Manchester City.
Salah later addressed those comments after being named player of the match against City, cheekily suggesting he wouldn’t have received the honour if Carragher had been the one deciding.
Some Liverpool supporters have gone further, alleging that Carragher intentionally avoids recognising Salah’s achievements. One fan even shared part of his remarks on X, accompanied by a pointed message. “Be serious, @Carra23. Trying way too hard.”
Carragher responded: “Maybe you try harder at putting the full quote out! I said he’s been the best player over 18 months which he has in my eyes. And you probably know I said that but your desperation for likes & retweets knows no bounds!! Your account is so bad, please stop following me.”
Thought
Carragher’s remarks have sparked controversy once again, largely because many seem to be ignoring the full context of his statement.
What some Liverpool fans on social media appear to overlook is that Salah dealt with an injury early in 2024, and his form upon returning was less impressive, scoring only three goals in his final 11 matches of the season.
In fact, Salah was even benched toward the end of the campaign, notably following his reported fallout with Jurgen Klopp during the match against West Ham.
While Salah has undoubtedly been the standout player in the Premier League this season, Carragher’s argument focuses on the last 18 months. From that perspective, Palmer’s consistency might give him the edge.
