Premier League Issue Statement as Liverpool Denied Late Penalty Against Newcastle
The Premier League have clarified why Liverpool were not awarded a penalty in their dramatic 3-3 draw with Newcastle on Wednesday night.
The incident occurred late in the match when the ball struck the hand of Newcastle defender Dan Burn inside the penalty area.
Liverpool were pushing for a decisive goal in the dying moments of the game, having just seen Fabian Schar score an equaliser for the Magpies. The Reds believed they had a valid claim for a penalty after Alexis Mac Allister’s shot hit Burn’s hand.
Despite Liverpool’s appeals, the referee dismissed their protests on the pitch. VAR subsequently reviewed the incident and upheld the on-field decision, ruling out the possibility of a penalty for the visitors.
“The referee’s call of no penalty for a potential handball by Burn is checked and confirmed by VAR, deeming that his arm was tucked into the body,” read a statement from the Premier League Match Centre on X (formerly Twitter)..
Liverpool struggled in the first half during their trip to the north-east, falling behind 10 minutes before halftime when Alexander Isak delivered a stunning strike from the edge of the penalty area.
The Reds found their footing early in the second half, with Curtis Jones scoring the equaliser. However, the hosts regained their advantage as Anthony Gordon’s effort slipped past Caoimhin Kelleher.
Liverpool responded again, leveling the score for a second time through Mohamed Salah, who registered his 10th Premier League goal of the season.
The Egyptian forward seemed to have secured victory for Liverpool when he struck again with seven minutes left. However, Fabian Schar’s late goal ensured the match ended in a draw.
Despite the result, Liverpool remain seven points clear at the top of the Premier League table. Meanwhile, second-place Chelsea narrowed the gap by defeating Southampton 5-1 on the same night.
And after the final whistle, Liverpool boss Arne Slot told Amazon Prime: “I have mixed feelings – we were outstanding in the second half but we were not good enough in the first half. Maybe 3-3 is what the game deserved.
“They were really aggressive and forced us into mistakes, but we were so much better in the second half. I knew the game could be changed around – we were much better with the ball.
“After the week we had we could change the game which is a very positive thing to take. Every time we need Mo Salah, he scores a goal.
“We are hoping and expecting he can continue this for a long time. He was outstanding in the second half, he did many special things for us.”
