Arne Slot Reveals “Outstanding” Liverpool Star Likely to Lose Starting Spot

Caoimhin Kelleher made a crucial penalty save against Kylian Mbappe during Liverpool’s Champions League victory over Real Madrid.

Despite Kelleher’s impressive performance, Arne Slot has reiterated that Alisson Becker will remain Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper once he regains full fitness.

Alisson has been out of action for nearly two months due to a hamstring injury, missing the last 10 games. During his absence, Kelleher has stepped up and delivered exceptional performances.

The Irish goalkeeper has played a key role in keeping Liverpool at the top of both the Premier League and Champions League standings.

In the Reds’ 2-0 triumph over Real Madrid on Wednesday, Kelleher’s penalty save against Mbappe preserved Liverpool’s narrow lead and earned high praise from Slot, who described him as “outstanding.”

However, the Anfield head coach has previously stated that Alisson will reclaim his position as the No.1 goalkeeper once he is fully fit.

The former AS Roma star has already resumed partial training, with Liverpool preparing to face Premier League title contenders Manchester City on Sunday.

When questioned about whether he faces a tough choice between Alisson and Kelleher, Slot responded:

“I think every decision I have to make is a difficult one, because we have so many quality players. I’ve been clear about that situation but tonight shouldn’t be about that, it should be about Caoimh being so important for us.

“It was a big moment for him also I think; if you see Mbappe behind the ball, I thought probably what everybody thought – and what everybody also thought when Mo [Salah] stepped up – ‘This ball is probably going to go in’.

“And he saved it, so it was a big moment for him, a special moment for him. So, let that be the headlines and not the other thing I was quite clear about one or two weeks ago.”
