Liverpool Manager Arne Slot Lists Top Seven Most Difficult Away Games, Including Newcastle
Liverpool boss Arne Slot has urged the team to secure more wins in away matches.
Slot has advised that Liverpool should emulate Manchester City’s strategy of achieving crucial away victories if they are serious about contending for the championship.
He referenced Kevin De Bruyne’s iconic goal at Chelsea in September 2017, which helped secure City’s first league title under Pep Guardiola after a challenging debut season.
Slot is preparing for what he expects to be his toughest game as Liverpool manager at Arsenal tomorrow. Last season, Liverpool managed only one away win against teams like Arsenal, City, Tottenham, Chelsea, Newcastle, Manchester United, and Aston Villa.
The Reds’ head coach has challenged his players to elevate their performance in away games, saying:
“It’s such a long time ago, but I can remember the first year when Pep was at City, they hardly won any away games.
“In the second year, I remember it was the first one, Chelsea away, Kevin De Bruyne scored a solo goal, and they won for the first time, a big away game.
“So if you want to win this league, you need to win a few of the five, six, seven very difficult away games.”
“We’re talking about Newcastle, we’re talking about Chelsea, Aston Villa, Tottenham, City, United and Arsenal.”
In their four matches against Arsenal and City last season, Liverpool secured only three points—a factor that proved pivotal as they ultimately finished third in the title race.
“If you look at Arsenal last season, I think it was seven points in between Arsenal and Liverpool,” he said.
“The away game Arsenal won. So if we could change the away result, which we can’t, to a win for Liverpool that would have made one point difference between the two teams.”
