“We Can Win Everything” – Liverpool Star Remains Optimistic About the Season Under Arne Slot
Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo believes last season’s relentless pursuit of trophies can drive the team forward under Arne Slot’s leadership. Despite being close to winning both the Premier League and Europa League, a late-season slump saw them fall short.
Under Jurgen Klopp, the Reds faced a sudden dip in performance, largely due to fatigue and a sense of complacency. They also struggled with a spate of injuries, which exposed their defensive weaknesses throughout the campaign.
This season, Liverpool have made a positive start, addressing many of the defensive concerns from the previous year. While Slot has introduced some tactical tweaks, the team’s core attacking philosophy remains intact.
A key change in their approach this season is a greater focus on game control, rather than prioritizing direct attacks or counter-attacks. This shift has improved efficiency and allowed players to conserve energy more effectively.
As a result, Liverpool now lead the Premier League, having won six of their first seven games. They have also secured victories in nine of their first 10 matches across all competitions, conceding just four goals.
In a recent interview with Sky Sports Premier League (via X), Gakpo discussed the team’s goals for the current season, following their strong start. He said:
“Hopefully, we can win everything. At the start of the season, we are in all competitions and yea when you participate in a competition, you participate to win so that’s how it goes.
“I think last season we showed that we could do it, ah we were very close to a lot of things [trophies] but yea we missed it in the end a little bit but that also gives us hope and strength for this season that we know weL could come that far so this season we can push even further”
Liverpool will face a challenging period following the October international break, with matches coming in quick succession, leaving little time for recovery.
In the Champions League, they are set to take on formidable opponents such as RB Leipzig, Bayer Leverkusen, and Real Madrid.
These fixtures will occur alongside their Premier League matches, where several top English clubs will look to disrupt their momentum.
Last season, Liverpool’s biggest adversary was often themselves, and they must steer clear of repeating those same self-sabotaging tendencies if they are to meet Gakpo’s high expectations for this season.
