Liverpool Star Breaks Silence on Jurgen Klopp’s Controversial Decision to Sign With Red Bull

Jurgen Klopp has agreed to take on the role of “Global Head of Soccer” at Red Bull, and one of his ex-players has shared his thoughts on the move. A Liverpool player has become the first to react to Klopp’s decision to accept a position with Red Bull.

In January, Klopp revealed that he would be stepping down as Liverpool’s manager after nine years, citing exhaustion. As one of the club’s most decorated managers, Klopp was honoured with an emotional send-off at Anfield in May, following a win against Wolves.

Since leaving his managerial post, Klopp has been enjoying some time away from football. However, on Wednesday morning, it was officially announced that he would be returning to the sport in a new capacity.

Klopp will now serve as Red Bull’s “Global Head of Soccer,” overseeing the company’s network of clubs like RB Leipzig, New York Red Bulls, and Red Bull Salzburg.

Though Klopp will not manage daily operations, he will offer strategic guidance on key areas like coaching, player development, and recruitment.

Oliver Mintzlaff, CEO of Corporate Projects and Investments at Red Bull, was instrumental in persuading Klopp to take the job. Reports suggest the agreement may have been in place before Klopp’s departure from Liverpool.

Despite his accomplishments, Klopp’s decision has sparked debate, with some fans and media outlets accusing him of “selling out” and harming his legacy.

Portugal international Diogo Jota, one of Klopp’s former players, voiced his support for Klopp’s new career path when asked about it during his national team duties.

Speaking to Record, Jota said: “Klopp? He’s a person I have a lot of affection for, we have to respect his decision. I wish him the best of luck in this new stage.”

Klopp will start his long-term contract on January 2025 and has expressed his excitement about the role.

“A few months ago I said I don’t see myself on the sideline anymore and it is still the case,” he said in a video on Instagram.

“But I still love football and working and Red Bull gives me the perfect platform for that.

“I want to share my experience which I collected over the years and we all know there are more successful managers out there.

“In my career I fought for promotion, fought against relegation and fought for titles and trophies.

“Sometimes we failed and sometimes we succeeded and dealing with that is not easy.

“I want to learn again because when you’re in the job and you have to play every three days, you barely have time for that.”

Jürgen Klopp has returned to his holiday and is expected to be formally introduced in his new position during a press conference in January.

It is believed that the role includes a clause allowing him to leave for the Germany national team job.
