“I think” – Alan Shearer and Micah Richards Respond When Asked If Arne Slot Can Win Premier League for Liverpool This Season
Liverpool hold the top position in the Premier League under Arne Slot after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Crystal Palace.
The only goal of the match came from Diogo Jota at Selhurst Park, earning commendation from Palace manager Oliver Glasner for Liverpool’s strong performance away from home.
In his inaugural league season at Anfield, Slot has steered Liverpool to six victories in seven matches, with only one loss to date.
The team has accumulated 18 points in the Premier League, placing them slightly ahead of Manchester City and Arsenal, who both have 17 points.
However, the day was marred by injuries to Alisson and Alexis Mac Allister, which raises concerns moving forward.
Alan Shearer and Michah Richards Deliver Verdicts on Liverpool Title Chances
According to Alan Shearer, this issue could hinder Liverpool’s chances of securing the Premier League title this season.
He was asked on BBC Match of the Day by Gary Lineker: “Liverpool top, we’ve seen Man City and Arsenal as well. Could they? Can they? Will they?”
And Shearer replied: “They certainly can, absolutely yeah. They need to stay clear of injuries. We’ve seen a couple that they’ve had today, but I think we’ve seen enough already in the first few games to say that they’ll be strong, he’s made a really good start.”
Micah Richards meanwhile responded: “The thing is Chelsa and Arsenal are next, that’s when we are going to judge them.
“But they look good, in a different way to [Jurgen] Klopp. More slower-paced, through the lines, slower build-up and all those sorts of things, but they’re doing well.”
Mac Allister clearly faced a significant issue during the match against Palace, leading to his withdrawal at halftime.
Similarly, Alisson was visibly frustrated after his own injury forced him off the pitch with just over ten minutes remaining.
Both players have been essential to Slot’s plans thus far, and their absence will undoubtedly be felt. However, Liverpool posses more than capable replacements ready to step in.
Although Federico Chiesa was the only new addition during the summer transfer window, Klopp provided Slot with a remarkably talented and notably deep squad.
Vitezslav Jaros stepped in for Alisson and made a strong impression on his debut for Liverpool.
Nevertheless, the impressive Caoimhin Kelleher is expected to take the Brazilian’s place after sitting out the match against Palace.
In the meantime, Dominik Szoboszlai seamlessly took over Mac Allister’s role, and Wataru Endo is also equipped to fill in within the midfield.
