“Necessary” Liverpool Change Explained After Bournemouth Win as Andy Robertson Singles Out Teammate for Praise

Liverpool returned to winning ways in the league with a 3-0 victory over Bournemouth, thanks to three first-half goals. Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez scored his first goal of the season, contributing to the team’s dominant display before the break.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot praised his forwards for how they responded to the necessary rotation after the game. Left-back Andy Robertson also singled out Nunez for particular praise, recognising his contribution to the team’s success.

By half-time, Slot’s team had already secured the win. Luis Diaz found the net twice in quick succession, followed by Nunez’s curling strike to make it three.

The second half remained goalless, and summer signing Federico Chiesa made his Premier League debut as a late substitute in what was a relatively easy afternoon for Liverpool.

This victory brings Liverpool level with league leaders Manchester City, who are set to play Arsenal on Sunday. The result also allowed Liverpool to put their recent defeat to Nottingham Forest behind them. While Diaz has started the season strongly for Slot’s side, Nunez had been waiting for his first goal of the campaign.

Nunez’s strike was his first goal at club level in over five months, following a challenging end to the previous season. Only a last-minute clearance denied him a second goal, and Robertson praised his overall performance, highlighting his work beyond just the goal.

“Really happy,” the Scot told BBC Radio 5 Live. “Obviously last week it was disappointing, but we managed to bounce back Tuesday [against AC Milan] – it was about getting back on track in the league.

“Darwin [Nunez] has had to be patient. He has worked hard in training, trying to get better like we all have. He has waited for his chance and today he was excellent.

“Luis [Diaz] has started the season really well, delighted for those two. He [Nunez] was waiting for his chance and he took it today.”

“Today was a good game for us, although Bournemouth were in the game as well,” Slot told beIN Sports. “It sounds a bit weird with a 3-0 victory but they were joining the game.

When asked about his team’s depth in attack, he added “It’s nice but it’s also necessary and it’s also normal for a club of our standards.

“Other clubs that we are in competition with have the same… It’s very good that even if they don’t play then the next time they are all over it again. They were aggressive without the ball and they showed quality with the ball.”

Asked specifically about Nunez by Match of the Day, he said: “We hope we are adding goals [to his game] because that is what you need from a striker but this work rate was really good. We have a lot of good players, a lot of competition, and as long as they keep performing it is a very good thing for me.”

Liverpool are set to face West Ham in the Carabao Cup midweek. The Hammers, who were defeated by Chelsea at home on Saturday, advanced by beating Bournemouth in the previous round.

Following that, Liverpool will travel to face Wolves, another team currently in the lower half of the table alongside West Ham. Despite their opponents’ standings, former Reds midfielder Danny Murphy praised both teams for their performances at Anfield on Saturday.
