Possible Liverpool Line-up in 2028 Featuring Rio Ngumoha, Four Academy Graduates, and New Signings
Liverpool have secured the signing of Rio Ngumoha from Chelsea after the young talent declined a new contract offer at Stamford Bridge.
In recent years, it’s clear that Liverpool have been preparing for the future. The club have consistently brought in promising teenagers from rival academies to strengthen their youth ranks, and this strategy is proving successful. One notable example is Harvey Elliott, who joined Liverpool from Fulham at the age of 16 in 2019. The attacking midfielder has since made 120 appearances for the Reds, scoring 10 goals and providing 14 assists.
Following in Elliott’s footsteps, several other young players have joined Liverpool at a similar age. These include Stefan Bajcetic from Celta Vigo, Kaide Gordon from Derby County, and Ben Doak from Celtic. Additionally, Bobby Clark, who signed from Newcastle for £1.5 million, was recently sold to Red Bull Salzburg for £10 million after three years at the club.
The latest addition to Liverpool’s promising youth squad is Rio Ngumoha. The young winger has joined the Reds after rejecting a new contract from Chelsea, leaving the London club reportedly ‘furious’. Ngumoha made his debut for Chelsea’s under-21 team last season at the age of 15 and had also trained with the first team.
He still has a long journey ahead to establish himself at Liverpool. Many promising young talents have fallen short of reaching their full potential. Players like Ben Woodburn, Jordon Ibe, and Joao Teixeira all had promising beginnings but eventually left Anfield.
However, if Ngumoha continues to progress on his current path, he could follow in the footsteps of Elliott and academy graduates such as Trent Alexander-Arnold, Curtis Jones, and Conor Bradley.
With that in mind, Newsnow Liverpool thought it would be interesting to make a prediction about how Reds’ lineup might look in 2028, when Ngumoha will be 20 years old.
GK – Giorgi Mamardashvili
Earlier this summer, Liverpool secured the services of Georgia international Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia for a fee of up to £29 million. Although he is set to remain with the Spanish side for the rest of the current season, he is widely considered a potential long-term replacement for Alisson Becker.
RB – Trent Alexander-Arnold
Supporters are hoping that this will not be the final season for Trent Alexander-Arnold at Anfield, as his contract approaches its expiration. The England international is viewed as the likely successor to the Liverpool captaincy.
CB – Jarell Quansah
Jarell Quansah enjoyed a breakout season in 2023-24, earning recognition within the Liverpool camp. At just 21 years old, he is still far from reaching his full potential, but the club holds him in high regard.
CB – Ibrahima Konate
Ibrahima Konate, the French international, is just entering his prime at the age of 25. However, his biggest challenge will be avoiding frequent injuries. Liverpool are also optimistic that Alvin Ayman, who joined from Wolves earlier this summer, will push for a spot in the first team.
LB – Rayan Ait-Nouri
At 30 years old, Andy Robertson may not be Liverpool’s first-choice left-back in the coming years. Rayan Ait-Nouri has been strongly linked with a move to Anfield from Wolves, a transfer that could eventually happen.
CM – Ryan Gravenberch
Ryan Gravenberch has begun this season in excellent form after being transitioned into a No.6 role. At just 22, he could be the long-term solution for Liverpool’s midfield, with Stefan Bajcetic being another option. Bajcetic is hoping for a successful loan spell at Red Bull Salzburg.
CM – Alexis Mac Allister
Since his £35 million move from Brighton in July 2023, Alexis Mac Allister has quickly become a fan favorite. At 25, he is still progressing and is expected to be a key figure in Liverpool’s midfield for years to come.
CM – Trey Nyoni
There is ongoing competition between Dominik Szoboszlai, Harvey Elliott, and Curtis Jones for a spot in Liverpool’s midfield in the future. However, Trey Nyoni is highly regarded within the club and has already been training with the first team this season, despite being just 17 years old. He is seen as a significant prospect for the future.
RW – Ben Doak
Although Mo Salah may sign a new contract with Liverpool and still be playing for the club in 2028, Liverpool is expected to search for potential successors. Ben Doak is eager to claim the position for himself. If he can impress during his loan spell at Middlesbrough this season, it will significantly improve his chances of securing a more prominent role.
ST – Darwin Nunez
The Uruguay international has shown both immense potential and frustrating inconsistency during his two years at Anfield, following a £75 million move. If manager Arne Slot can help Nunez find consistency, he could be the key striker for Liverpool in both the present and future, especially considering he is still only 25 years old.
LW – Rio Ngumoha
Rio Ngumoha, who joined from Chelsea, is right-footed and could be a long-term successor for Luis Diaz. However, he must not get ahead of himself and should focus on absorbing all the guidance from the coaching staff if he is to reach his full potential at Liverpool.
