Arne Slot Names Unsung Liverpool Duo Who Were “There Every Time” in Manchester United Victory

Liverpool secured a 3-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford, with goals from Luis Diaz and Mo Salah.

Arne Slot emphasised the crucial role played by Liverpool’s center-back pairing in successfully carrying out the game plan during the win against Manchester United.

The Reds maintained their flawless start to the 2024-25 season with a dominant 3-0 performance against their arch-rivals at Old Trafford. Luis Diaz scored twice, and Mo Salah also found the back of the net, ensuring a well-earned victory for the visitors.

Liverpool exerted significant control in the midfield, with United’s Casemiro being substituted at halftime due to his struggles, while Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes also found it difficult.

Ryan Gravenberch, who was adapted into a No. 6 role by Slot, was outstanding and contributed to the first goal. Additionally, Alexis Mac Allister intercepted the ball from Mainoo, leading to Szoboszlai setting up Salah’s goal.

Slot believes that the Reds’ success in the midfield battle was largely due to Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate, who played aggressively, stepping up from defence to reclaim possession from United.

Head coach Slot said: “When we had ball possession we were hoping that we could find one of our midfielders open or free every time.

“But, again, also these three played a very good game, I agree with you, but they need their centre-backs to play the ball through the lines.

“They need the centre-backs to be close to them for the moments they cannot arrive, then Ibou [Konate] was there, Virgil [van Dijk] was there.

“Virgil every time stepped into the midfield defensively, also. Like I said, it was a team performance and, you know me a bit now, it is always about the team and then the individual can show himself.

“I think all 11 of them and the ones that came in played a very good game, but that’s not a coincidence because the team played really well.”
