Gary Neville Snubs Jamie Carragher in Tense Man Utd 0-3 Liverpool Moment on Sky Sports
During a live TV broadcast, Gary Neville ignored Jamie Carragher when the Liverpool legend teased him about a past bold claim. This exchange occurred as Manchester United trailed 3-0 at Old Trafford against Liverpool.
Neville had previously claimed that former Reds manager Jurgen Klopp would gladly exchange Liverpool’s midfield for Manchester United’s.
However, after Neville criticised United’s midfield quartet of Casemiro, Kobbie Mainoo, Bruno Fernandes, and Toby Collyer, Carragher reminded him of that statement.
Carragher asked Neville: “Would you still swap the midfields?” Only for his colleague to ignore him and continue making a point. When Neville finished, Carragher then wryly added: “Now you’ve finished are you going to answer my question?”
Just over a year ago, under their former manager Klopp, Liverpool completely overhauled their midfield by bringing in Alexis Mac Allister, Dominic Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo, and Ryan Gravenberch.
While Endo was the only one who didn’t start in the heavy defeat in Manchester, Neville wasn’t convinced by these signings when they first joined Liverpool. He mentioned this on The Overlap:
“When you look at the actual players, let’s take United as an example; Fernandes, (Mason) Mount, Casemiro, (Christian) Eriksen. I think that Jurgen Klopp would swap his midfield now for United’s…”
Gary Neville’s criticism of Manchester United’s midfield has backfired, particularly in light of recent performances.
His ongoing critique of United’s central players has been highlighted once again as Liverpool’s midfield trio of Mac Allister, Gravenberch, and Szoboszlai outperformed their Manchester United counterparts.
The disparity between the two teams’ midfield strength was further underscored by their transfer activity.
Erik ten Hag felt compelled to bolster his squad by bringing in Sofyan Amrabat on the final day of the transfer window a year ago. However, Amrabat struggled to make a significant impact, leading to the necessity for additional signings.
In a bid to improve their midfield, Scott McTominay, who was one of Ten Hag’s most dependable players last season, was offloaded to make way for Manuel Ugarte, who was brought in to effectively take over Casemiro’s role.
The urgency for Ugarte to make an immediate impact became glaringly apparent during the match against Liverpool. A costly error by Casemiro, who lost possession, allowed Liverpool to capitalize and score their second goal, courtesy of Luis Diaz.
Manchester United legend Roy Keane criticized Casemiro’s performance, stating that Liverpool found it far too easy to break through United’s defense.
Liverpool’s 3-0 victory further emphasized the gap between the two sides, leaving Neville’s earlier comments looking increasingly ill-judged.
