“Superb”: Gary Lineker Names the Two Liverpool Players Already Impressing Under Arne Slot After Win Over Brentford
Arne Slot’s tenure as Liverpool manager began on a high note at Anfield with a 2-0 victory over Brentford on Sunday.
Liverpool had already demonstrated promise in their Premier League season opener by defeating Ipswich Town, and the early indicators were positive.
In front of their home fans, Slot’s start was described as ‘pretty impressive’ by Gary Lineker. Liverpool, along with Arsenal, remain one of the few teams yet to concede a goal after two matches.
Only four teams have managed to secure 100% starts this season, with Arsenal’s triumph over Aston Villa standing out as the weekend’s statement game.
Jurgen Klopp’s era was marked by an aggressive, high-octane style that brought widespread success for the club. In contrast, Slot’s Liverpool appear more composed and controlled, yet still possesses a lethal threat in the final third.
Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah were the scorers against Brentford. Diaz netted the opening goal just 13 minutes into the match, capitalizing on a swift counter-attack.
Liverpool had to wait until the 70th minute for Salah to score again, marking his second consecutive match with a goal. Lineker remarked that Salah looked ‘sharp’ and noted that Liverpool could have scored even more.
Another standout performer under Slot, according to Lineker, is Trent Alexander-Arnold, who was described as ‘superb’ for his display, as mentioned on The Rest is Football podcast.
It’s still early, but Liverpool fans have reason to be quietly pleased with their new manager’s performance, as it’s rare to adapt and make such an impact so quickly.
Gary Lineker Lauds Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah
“I thought they were pretty impressive,” said Lineker about Liverpool’s performance. “They could have scored a lot more goals. I thought, once again, like last week. Trent Alexander-Arnold was superb. Mo Salah is looking sharp. A good start for Arne Slot.
“They were very dominant throughout. They had lots of chances. The goalkeeper (Brentford’s Mark Flekken) played well.”
Liverpool supporters will understandably be urging the club to offer new contracts to key players like Alexander-Arnold and Salah, both of whom are set to become free agents next summer.
Salah has garnered interest from Saudi Arabia, while Alexander-Arnold has been linked with a move to Real Madrid. This raises the possibility of a worst-case scenario.
Should these two, along with captain Virgil van Dijk, leave the club next summer, serious questions would need to be asked about the club’s decisions and overall strategy.
Realistically, Liverpool should not find themselves in a situation where three of their most crucial players are nearing the end of their contracts. This points to a significant failure in management.
